Mahler: Complete Symphonies Nos 1-9 (Decca Collectors Edition)

At the time of these recordings of Mahler's nine Symphonies by Decca during the 1970/80s Sir Georg Solti and his Chicago Symphony Orchestra were arguably the finest orchestra in the world. Their stunning virtuoso performances and recordings were a joy to listen to and that's what you get when you listen to this excellent box set of Mahler's nine symphonies. In particular Sir Georg's interpretations of the Second ("Resurrection"), Third and Ninth Symphonies are outstanding and inspired. The last movement of the Second ("Resurrection") Symphony has most beautiful singing by the soloists and chorus, and controlled orchestral playing leading to an impressive climax. In the Third Symphony there is a fine trombone solo in the opening movement. (The CSO brass had a amazing reputation.) Then, in the fourth movement there is beautiful singing by contralto and chorus. The playing of the CSO in the final movement is very movingly done. The playing also in the Ninth Symphony is a revelation, with stunning playing from the strings in the first and last movements, and of course fine woodwind and strong brass and percussion. The Sixth and Seventh Symphonies are also highlights in this box set of bench mark recordings of Mahler Symphonies.

First things first. not all the complete mahler's are proper cycles. Solti's is a compplete cycle, with the same orchestra and singers such as Heather Harper. Whilst Bernstein's is good, it is a manufactured cycle using more than 1, or 2, orchestras. So take care if you are looking for a cycle!

Right that said, let's get down to brass tacks - this is, I believe,one of the original cycles to be recorded and still the best, in my humble opinion. Solti brings out the best in the Chicago orchestra and the emotions are epic - just listen to number 2 or 8, or the adagietto from 5 - wowsa!! On a personal note, Solti wrings every drop from the percussion, and especially the timps - just listen to the end of the last movement of the Resurrection and those epic 2 last timp strikes.

To those who say other interpretations are more emotional, let me just say that Solti's cycle was pioneering. He was the Walter Scott of conductors at a time when Mahler's popularity was starting to grow.

I do not want to disrespect sir Solti but. I could not disagree more with my previous reviewers.

The playing is impeccable. The orchestra is Fantastic, that is for sure. BUT. Mahler comes from the old world. Bohamia in the Czeck/Austian territory and there is a tradition for musical interperation that sir Solti is not delivering, in my oppinion. I do regret that I bought this version and wish I had ordered the Bernstein version, instead.

It is not at all bad but I miss some of the sweetness and soothness that along with the Vienesse vibrato and warmth gives it the alpine scent that does not shine through the crisp and brilliant instrumentation of the CPO. They sure deliver all the notes. But I miss Mahler. Solti however is doing some modifications that I have never heard before and therefore I must say that this interperation is sertainly well worth listening to. That is the beuty of music. It can be interperated just like a poem. A poem should not mean, but be... It is just the same with music.

If you want to hear Mahler played like Shostakovich then this is the one to pick. I on the other hand would rather hear Shostakovich played like Mahler.

I was introduced to Mahler in the late 70's by the earlier recordings in this set. I remember no.s 5,6 and 7 being available in a box set of LPs but however cheaply Faringdon records sold it for I put off buying them in case there was a better recording. Nearly 30 years later, there still is no better recording available and Amazon are selling all 9 on CD for £25! All the performances are breathtaking. The Chicago are simply brilliant, definitely a cut above all the rest. Solti is magnificent and one feels every second of pleasure and anguish in each work. The brass are the best in the world. Thanks, Garry, for introducing me to the most sublime musical experiences I could possibly imagine.

this is definitely the definitive box set of mahlers 9 symphonies.three things decided me,your excellent reviewers and from experience you can't go wrong with decca or solti and am thoroughly delighted with this set.I will certainly recommend it and caution others not to settle for anything else,if you do you will always know there was something far superior out there.never have I heard the finale of his 8th.symphony played so hauntingly beautiful and if this is not enough,the transfers to c.d.are remarkably clean without being clinical and there is warmth there that you only expected on l.p.s.very well done all round cliffy

I have known these recordings for years. They still stand up after all this time.

Superb recordings at a bargain price.

The 8th Symphony is very bad production, Actually many movement should play continuously. But in this box you got 1s silent(stop) between its. Big mistake by Decca who in classical music industry for longtime.

私は、この指揮者の実演を残念ながら聴いたことがありません

しかし、次のような経験があります

ある日、テレビをつけるとベートーベンの七番の演奏が放送されていました

コンダクターの姿を見るまでもなく、瞬時に(これはショルティの音だ)と判りました

ショルティの音が個性的で、他に類がないものだったからです

ショルティの音は、彼にしか出せない絶対的な個性があります

その個性が如実に表れたものこそマーラーのセットです

一番から九番まで一貫して硬質な、細部まで磨き上げられた音で紡がれています

音楽の録音行為にここまで誠実で、妥協を許さない指揮者を、私は他に知りません

一番の最終楽章、コーダの部分で(多分)ホルンのスタンドがあり、そのffの音が際立って聴こえます

この場所のスタンドは、ホルン奏者曰く、演奏しづらく反って音が弱くなるらしいです

テレビの映像で他の指揮者によるものを聴いても、ホルンが一斉に立ち上がった瞬間、マイクの位置がずれるからでしょうか、ホルンの音が弱くほぼ聴こえないという現象を皆さんも経験されたのではないでしょうか

二番は録音の仕方が異質で、カチコチの音で録音されています

批判される方もいるでしょうが、マーラーの絶叫、終楽章の合唱の壮絶さは類のないスケールです

三番は繊細な大曲です

物理的に長い曲ですが、非常に楚々とした繊細な音楽です

一楽章こそ混沌とした雰囲気ですが、基本的なトーンはメルヘン的です

これもショルティの棒にかかれば、磨かれた金属のように光り輝いています

四番は、マーラーの中で一番メルヘンチックな音楽です

これも実に良い

五番は、マーラーのメルヘン的な性質と牧歌的な性質の極みといえる傑作です

一楽章二楽章はマイナーコードによる暗い音楽ですが三楽章でその趣が一変します

三楽章の中間部、弦のピチカートによるppの部分はマーラー音楽の白眉ではないでしょうか

バーンスタインのような「マーラー屋」による演奏では、この部分の美しさを一際際立出せています

ショルティによるそこは、特に際立たせてはいません

しかし、まるでオルゴールが鳴っているかのような美感をたたえています

六番からマーラーの音楽に変化が現れます

アルマとの結婚生活が影響しているのでしょうか

音楽からメルヘンが消え去ります

音楽は、暗い鬱とした雰囲気と絶望に包まれます

しかし、六番はpp部分にカウベルなどが鳴り響き、牧歌的な雰囲気を残しています

六番の三楽章は、まるで一人森の中を彷徨っているかのような、孤独で草の息吹を感じるような音楽です

ショルティは硬質な音で、この楽章の寂寥感を見事に奏でているではありませんか

七番からは、いよいよ音楽が鬱々としてきます

牧歌的な雰囲気は次第に弱くなり、現実的な陰気さや孤独感に包まれます

二楽章四楽章が夜の音楽と言われています

この二つには、嘗てのメルヘンや牧歌的易しさはりません

ショルティの硬質な音が実に冴えわたるようです

八番、千人の交響曲と言われています

祝賀的な音楽とみなされていますが、私にはヤケッパチな明るさに感じられます

ショルティのレコード盤を若いころ所有していましたが、二楽章の途中途中でレコード盤をひっくり返さなければかったのを思い出しました

当然CDではそんな面倒はありません

大地の歌、九番はマーラー音楽の結論的な曲です

どちらも一切の生やさしさはなく、メルヘン的な雰囲気もありません

この二曲の素晴らしさについては、言わずもがなでしょう

あえてその良さを記すまでもないでしょう

さて、このセットはショルティという偉大な指揮者の良さが出た、素晴らしいものです

ショルティは、今後もっと評価されるべきでしょう

褒めてばかりでは単なる贔屓になってしまいます

ショルティにも不得手な作曲家がいます

ブルックナーがそれです

ショルティのブルックナーはよろしくない

特に五番は、ロングトーンの練習を聴いているかのようで、変です

何はともあれ、この指揮者はこれまであまりにも過小評価されすぎました

これからは、もっと評価されるべきです

Die Gesamteinspielung der vollständigen Mahler Sinfonien ohne "Das Lied von der Erde" des Chicago Symphony Orchestras unter Sir Georg Solti wurde in der Vergangenheit immer stark kritisiert, da Solti zu barbarisch, zu roh dirigiere. Bei dieser Betrachtungsweise fällt allerdings immer unter den Tisch, dass Mahlers Sinfonien durchaus rohe, barbarische Elemente bergen und dass Solti durchaus dazu in der Lage ist - und das zeigt sein wundervoller Beethoven Zyklus -, differenziert, feinfühlig und sanft zu dirigieren.

Die erste Sinfonie zeichnet sich vor allem dadurch aus, dass Solti sie unprätentiös und schnörkellos zu Gehör bringt. Insbesondere der wunderbare Naturlaut erstrahlt mysteriös und der dritte Satz kann es durchaus mit der Interpretation Bernsteins aufnehmen. Alles in allem eine geniale, zeitgemäße Erste.

Die zweite Sinfonie ist gewiss ausgezeichnet eingespielt, allerdings finde ich, dass Solti es hier nicht ganz vermag, mit Bernsteins oder Klemperers Referenzeinspielung(en) Schritt zu halten. Das Röschen leuchtet zwar rot und der erste Satz ist natürlich majestätisch, aber dass Finale ist mir etwas zu wenig andachtsvoll.

Wunderbar gemeistert liegt die dritte Sinfonie vor: Der erste Satz erweist sich als regelrechtes Frühlingserwachen, wenn Pan majestätisch einzieht. Die rhythmische Variation und das energische Spiel des Orchesters sorgen dafür, dass dieser Satz niemals öde wird trotz seiner Überlänge. Die folgenden beiden Sätze sind ebenso packend inszeniert. Aus Zarathustras Mitternachtslied holt Solti das Maximum heraus; und selbst der beinahe alberne fünfte Satz vermag, zu Tränen zu rühren. Eine tiefgründige, ruhig getragene Interpretation des Finales schließt sich an, die die allgegenwärtige Messlatte Bernstein sogar übertrifft.

Die vierte Sinfonie, die in meinen Augen schwächste Mahler Sinfonie, überzeugt vor allem in ihrem tiefsinnigen vierten Satz. Solti gibt auch diesem Werk die ihm gebührende Zeit und die Solitsin Kiri Te Kenawa leistet einen sehr guten Beitrag zur Rezeption dieser Sinfonie.

Die fünfte Sinfonie, die bekannteste Mahler Sinfonie, ist geradezu brutal interpretiert. Der Trauermarsch des ersten Satzes darf getrost seines Gleichen harren. Auch wenn mir der zweite und der fünfte Satz nicht gefallen, gebe ich zu, dass Solti sie gnadenlos leidenschaftlich interpretiert. Das zarte, facettenreiche Scherzo scheint Solti besonders zu liegen und das Adagietto ist zwar appassioniert und fein, aber niemals mit zu wenig Distanz gespielt, was dem Intermezzo Charakter dieses Satzes gut tut.

Die wuchtige sechste Sinfonie ist interessanterweise diejenige, deren Interpretation Solti am wenigsten gelingt, da er vor allem in den Mittelsätzen zu wenig Genauigkeit und in den Kopfsätzen zu wenig Gewalt walten lässt.

"Lieder der Nacht" ist der Beiname der siebenten Sinfonie und Solti nimmt ihn ernst. Die beiden Nachtmusiken sind voller Abwechslung, Lieblichkeit und Grazie, dass dem Hörer das Herz aufgeht. Die Kopfsätze meistert Solti mit Bravour und das Scherzo macht seiner Satzbezeichnung "Schattenhaft" alle Ehre. Obschon hiermit eine geniale Einspielung vorliegt, bleibt Bernstein bei dieser Sinfonie, besonders im Finale, unangefochten.

Die monströse Achte kann es aber durch und durch mit diesem aufnehmen: Die Anfangsakkorde des "Veni creator spiritus" habe ich selten so intensiv gehört. Der gesamte erste Satz im teils nervigen Dauerforte wird unter Solti nie eintönig. Der instrumentale Beginn des zweiten ist sehr spannend und empfindsam. Goethe hätte sich sicher über diese wundervolle Vertonung der Finalszene seines Faust II gefreut, denn Solti wendet neben Ruhe und Emotion auch Wucht und Majestät an. Eine geniale Achte!

Zu guter letzt die schmerzvolle neunte Sinfonie: Auch wenn sie grundsätzlich in Dur steht, verleiht Solti ihrem ersten und vierten Satz eine derart tiefe Empfindung, Leidenschaft und ein derart tiefes Pathos, dass dem geneigtem Hörer das Hören beinahe vergeht. Die Sinne schwinden auch in den brachialen Binnensätzen, die Soltis Stil sehr entgegenkommen.

Fazit: Auch wenn ich darüber enttäuscht war, dass das Adagio der unvollendeten Zehnten und "Das Lied von der Erde" fehlen, welches selbes ja von Mahler selbst auch als Sinfonie bezeichnet worden ist, und dass die CDs lediglich in billigen Papierhüllen verpackt sind, bleibt festzuhalten, dass Solti einen Meilenstein in der Mahler Interpretation geschafft und geschaffen hat. Der Decca Klang ist wie immer einwandfrei, glasklar und durchsichtig und mit Ausnahme der sechsten Sinfonie ist es Solti gelungen, eine astreine Synthese hinzulegen zwischen Brutalität und Einfühlsamkeit.

Solti e Mahler: interpretazioni vispe ed agili, senza perdere dell'aspetto introspettivo che pervade queste sinfonie. Solo a momenti Solti mi sembra un poco più sbrigativo di altri, ma è più una mia impressione e una caratteristica dell'interpretazione che un difetto.

Registrazioni che coprono un arco temporale abbastanza ampio, ma mediamente ottime. Spicca l'8a, anche se ancora analogica.

Non comprendo due recensione precedenti: Solti in Mahler è semmai più veloce/vispo che lento, e i cd contenuti nel cofanetto suonano esattamente come i separati.

Sir Georg Solti was a superb conductor of Gustav Mahler's symphonies. Several of his recordings earned Grammy's and other awards. London/Decca produce a great sound.
