River tiles done. A bit of shine still, and some touch ups needed, but I love how a good matt varnish makes it. The eagle eyed will notice the town has grown a dock area, which should double for river or coast (when that inevitably happens).

A bridge too far…
So, one final river piece, it’s the exact same size as the footbridge piece, so takes the same spot either side of (or instead of) the mill. Nothing fancy to say on that really…

Building Bridges and River redux…

Wetland
Some wetlands terrain bits. These have taken a long long time to finish.
This was my test piece using plasticard scraps, tufts, static grass and UV resin. The key unknown was how the resin would react to grass. It’s kind of lumpy, but also could get drawn up the grass/tufts which was something I’d need to avoid.
But first I had to build them. I decided to use 2mm foampvc for the raised bits, which would give a deeper pour (2mm less some for texture and grass). The edges were wide so I could try for a gradual slope and the base was 0.5mm plasticard. This was a mistake (see later).
They were textured and grass added. I used winter/dead static grass to give a decayed tone, but gradually added some of my usual spring and added these to the edges, subsequently adding more spring towards the edge. Tufts were dead shade from WWS. although these were later replaced with winter and autumn from Geek Gaming Scenics. The WWS ones were just too regularly shaped it didn’t look natural.
The pours took an age. Some of the areas were too wide with hindsight and would take a full day on the window sill to set completely - I have a UV light, which sets it, but finger prints are a hazard, so direct sunlight was required. And the heat reaction of the resin setting warped the plasticard. Bugger.
Mistakes were made, so when the resin was done I needed to bend the boards back and sand down the heat sag a bit. I also needed to grass again. This hid dodgy pours, blemishes and allowed a more ragged uneven ‘shoreline’ than the original's cut out foampvc bits. Glue was painted on the resin in wiggly lines for mid water tufts and the new tufts were added. Some small flock bushes were also added. I also added something I’d forgotten to add, a sunken barrel and some logs. I also added some more resin on the banks for shallower areas, as they didn’t look boggy enough for me. I smoothed these out as best I could before more waiting for the resin. These then needed grass to redo the ragged bank look. So much waiting. But they look ok. I’d do some things differently if I was to redo them, but these will do.
This pic is the old tufts:

Miller Time (new pics)...
I added a dovecote to the front wall to cover the expanse of wall without any real feature. Quite happy with it, although it's not that clear. I'll have to redo these pics at some point.
The millstones, cogs and bits are all scratchbuilt, the stairs are from Fenris Games.
The grain sacks are from Ainsty Castings Trade Goods range.

diving back in...
What is interesting is that the timbers are cut separately and stand proud... normally I’d do that myself with balsa, but may have to see if I can get a rough timber texture on them. The barn is simple enough, an extension floor is available, but I reckon I can do that myself. So far, so good, reckon I won’t go wrong to get a couple more if needed.

skirmish board
this was glued in place, only when I was pressing out any airbubbles, off came the grass (see cheap again), eventually I had a brown board with green patches... not good... so back to plan B and I stripped the cheap paper mat off and cut the expensive Mat-o-War up... once commited it went on quick enough, but again I had a couple of bubbles in the mat despite my best efforts - however the sturdiness of the mat came into it's own as I was able to slice the bubble, insert more glue and press it closed with no sign of the cuts and no sign of the bubble... this was working fine until I had a glue accident and the top surface got a few splodges of UHU which, despite clean up, managed to still leave some dark spots when dry... but a cunning plan occured and with some scenic spray cement I added some static grass - with a very dodgy nozzle, this was more random than I planned and so there is more on there than needed, but it helps give some more colour and texture to the grass and helps match up with the terrain I have... this was kind of at the back of my mind, as I had thought about the exposed earth areas on my terrain and I didn't really fancy doing that to the mat...
so, there it is... a handy skirmish board, a little under 3x2 feet that can sit nicely and flat either on the floor or on my small painting table (when it's clear)... it should be big enough for the small games I have in mind for either Folk Horror or Doctor Who, although some distances may need to be shortened... I just need to finish more scenery - the three river bank sections fit nicely along the long side and by removing the dock area, the two sections fit on the short side... I have some dirt tracks in mind (again nicked from Silent Invader) and this has led me to think about a bridge section as well... we'll see...
oh, and I kept the cork board on the other side - I plan to use that for urban/industrial terrain...

River WIP
As ever, looking for stuff that fits handily into A4 paper boxes (in this case a box for A4 label sheets), and as I've limited gaming space, confining myself to 3 or 4 foot square, a side/corner piece made more sense than having something run through the middle... I was quite impressed with Wirelizard's river banks over on LAF. Great idea... so I nicked it...The three sections are a bugger to photo though, the above is the best I've managed (click pic for a bigger one)... I've added some marks on the photo to show where the joins are, but there are two peices the length of a sheet of A4 and a shorter peice... if necessary, the wooden dock/reinforced bank can be left out for a shorter section, if left in it should be enough room for my Dwarf longship if I ever get progressing with that, or any combo can be a handy entrance point for Sea Devils (again if I catch up with those)... the exposed bank is made from torn cork tile, nice and bitty and looks the job... the grass by the dock has some tracks in to show wear... I had gone with a patchier look all over, but when I did some test shots on my gaming tiles, just looked silly... by adding grass in those patches it has left faint thin patches of bare earth which looks more like the field/riverbank look I wanted so result...
The river itself could do with darkening... annoyingly, the reeds look the same colour as the grass, should have used the paler ones, so may give them a lick of paint to lightenen them up... and of course the water surface needs lots and lots of gloss to look watery... I did look at various ways of doing waves and so on for the surface, but as I want to add the longship at some point, it would be better just flat... also a removable/seperate jetty is on the cards...
I'll try and get some better photos at some point/when finished, but I wanted to get something up this month and move on to a long planned Who project...
