I have been away for quite a while and I wonder if there are any rules to the secret mixter events, like how many samples or parts to use and others. I’m thinking of signing up but it must be workable for me so I thought it was better to ask, before having to dissapoint people cause I cant finish it.
thanks in advance for answering :) |

Dreamonizer,
Excellent question! You’re not the first person to wonder about the guidelines to the event. When I first started, I had some kind of idea, I just wasn’t sure, either. This is what works for me: *** 50% of your remix is who you’re assigned. To me, that means as we listen, we mostly hear their stuff throughout. *** If you can’t find much of their stuff to work with, just find something light and sing/speak over it. No worries. *** Also, if there’s not much, you might find something to loop, and then build on it, worse case scenario. If you know you won’t have much time to work on your remix, it’s okay to have a shorter one. If even that’s too much, there’s no shame to letting the admins know. We’d rather know sooner so we can cover for you. Life happens, right? As far as how many samples or parts, I don’t think there is a minimum. Something cool to try is a mashup of their vocals with one of their instrumentals. Nowadays, there’s lots of plug-ins to match tempo and pitch. I guess the number one rule you can’t break is to not tell anyone who you’re remixing until upload day. Kindly, Apoxode |

Does the 50% mean, that 50% of the samples need to come from the one you are remixing, or in time length of the track?

Dreamonizer,
I think it’s better if it’s time length. Here’s a for-instance: Say I remixed a song by Snowflake. I took one part of her sample and put it in the beginning of my song, but the rest of it was just music I created. People might say that it’s just me tricking the system to get my original music posted. Then say I took someone’s vocals, and they appeared almost every ten seconds in the remix. Much more interesting, too. Don’t worry, no one’s going to do some analysis of your track to check the ratios, it’s just got to have their spirit throughout, I think. No harm in trying the secret mixter at least once. I say go for it, and see what you think. Kindly, Apoxode |

In my Platinum Butterfly time i did several secret mixters, so im known with the concept ony the 50% rule was a bit vague to me. In fact that was kind of default for me like you describe it. I thought maybe some things were changed and it was needed to be at least half of the samples. Well so i will sign up for it. Always nice to be challenged to get out of my comfort zone. :)

Another question that came on my mind, after taking a look into some profiles of people who have joined the secret mixter. Is the use of AI generated voices and so allowed in a secret mixter? Personaly I would rather have that not to be allowed, but i see a few people making use of AI generated stuff. Not that I am totaly against it, but secret mixter is of another level in my experience and in my opinion it has to stay that way. Please share your thoughts on that with me…

Dreamonizer,
We share your concerns with the use of AI generated a/o assisted material. We allow the use of it, from generated material to assisted remixes, as long as it is tagged as such. You’re not going to like this suggestion, but you could tag all of your work to say “do_not_use_for_ai” This should be sufficient to discourage someone from using AI software on your material. As far as if they use other material generated by AI to remix you, we can’t prevent that because it’s allowed. In a way, this type of concern overlaps with artists using licensed material from other websites in their remixes. Sure, it’s legal and allowed, but is it creative? I guess what I’m saying is that it comes down to how the artist expresses themself with the material they use, whether it’s AI generated, licensed, or even public domain. Sometimes, participants are going to get remixes they don’t like at all. The best way to deal with that is to just say “thank you” and focus on the other event remixes. If you really don’t like what they did, there’s nothing wrong with not saying anything at all. Why spoil the mood, right? Ultimately, if someone uses AI in their remix of you, it might not be so bad. Maybe try and see what they were going for and look at it that way? Kindly, Apoxode |

well i meant, that i oppose the use of it in a secret mixter event, not totaly, like i said in my first post. when i would tag my stems like the way you suggest, i limit with that all use of it in that way
what i meant was more of that secret mixter has a long history of people realy doing nice things with the stems of others, just because the old way people need to be more creative in these things, i’m a bit afraid that will be gone when people are going to use ai on it at least the use of AI is described in the stems tags, so when i don’t want to use it myself i have a choice |
