I was driving down the highway yesterday and I had some random ccMixter songs playing. Up came unreal's version of Clarence's "serenity" and I found myself uncontrollably singing along...so I decided to do a quick cover/remix to get it out of my system :)

Awesome songwriting from Clarence and a tender touch from Paul. Please come back guys - we miss you.

Here's the lyrics; pell is uploaded here

"Serenity"

I bought a brand new car today
I drive it forty five miles each way
To a place that is not my home
And a life that's not my own
But I like the pay

Nobody dreams of responsibility
holding down a 9-5 eternity
Of incorporated slavery
(is it just me?)

But I...
Won't worry about
The things that I can't change

But the things I can I pray that I
Can find the strength to modify
And compromise

And I...
I hope that in time
I can come to know the difference
Serenity

But I do just what I can
Though money tumbles out my hands
And time is a currency
That I just don't see
Anymore

Is the future still unlimited?
Are dreams still worth dreaming?
oh the eyes of a child are shining
Looking up at me!

But I...
Won't worry about
The things that I can't change

But the things I can I pray that I
Can find the strength to modify
And compromise

And I...
I hope that in time
I can come to know the difference

Started with Clarence's intrumental tracks and Frank's vocals tracks. Very nice tracks. Smoove!

Instead of torturing the tracks, went with a minimal tweaks and victimization approach. Not familiar with hip hop ballad beats and sub-bass grooves, so this was a learning exercise.

(1) Added simple funk bass to the choruses. Modified the volume envelope of sub bass notes in the chorus to support the funk bass pattern.

(2) Created a mono Sub-bass track processing it with Amplitube 4's Sub Groove preset, which is a model of an Ampeg SVT-4 Pro amp, an old B-15 cabinet plus a pedal chain of envelope filter, overdrive, envelope filter to analog chorus. Happily, added a sub woofer to the studio so the low notes were more audible without headphones. Lots of audio signal in 30-40Hz range. This was different. We usually wack the audio off in that range to tight en up the bottom.

(3) Layered funk drums with Clarence's drums during the choruses.

(4) Created a mono track of the muted guitar processing through Amplitube 4's '65 Crisp preset, which is a model of the 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp. For more highs and transients, changed the single 12" speaker to a Brit Alnico G and changed the microphone to a Beyerdynamic M160 ribbon. No reverb was used since Clarence had the 'verb groove on the tack. Also, turned off the preset's fuzz wah pedal.

(5) Noticed drums were not a stereo signal so create a mono drum track to boost drive.

(6) Added the drum fill at the end of the first pre-chorus to the end of the second pre-chorus.

(7) The last word in Frank's M1 Verse R track was distorted. Pulled the same last word from M1 Verse L track, repitched to somewhat match the distorted audio.

(8) Nocthed the Sub Bass by 12dB at 94Hz with a tight Q to give the kick had a little head room. Increased the drums by 9dB at 94Hz with a tight Q for the same reason.

(9) Deleted the two glockenspiel riffs.

(10) In the TAI L and R track outros, removed the hard "t" at the end of the each "Thinking About It" phrase.
(11) Reused the first "You Got Me" phrase in the outro and adjusted the lead vocals to accommodate the change. This phrase sounded too good to hear only once.

(12) In the TAI L and R tracks, moved the first two "Thinking About It" groups of three to the right a couple clicks for beat alignment. Tangential remark: The first time TRF remixed one of Frank's songs "I Caught You", he adjusted the vocal track's beat alignment for us to make a better groove. And, all the time we thought we were savvy funky soul jazz rock fusion guys. Oh, well. Frank's the pro.

(13) Relegated Clarence's very funky guitar strums to the intro to accompany ElRon's intro riff.

(14) Dampened a frighteningly audible click in the Bridge R track embedded in the vocals. Frightening because it made me jump.

And, that's all folks.

I guess this qualifies as a love song...

I lost the original pell that and never posted it, so here it is rerecorded and remixed in the name of future love

The pella is here

Electric Lady Superstar

I've joined the positive to negative
but never got this far
from the diodes that I lifted
from the black box in my car

with printed circuit board all fine
from days of working double time
I built myself a woman
like I saw once in a bar

To find myself an electric lady superstar
- just turn on the switch
she came to life
her black eyed stare right through my dark

On double A's
my hopes were raised
her eye lids flickered
from the start!
A charge enough
to break my heart
from plans I've made
she looked the part

Since I have watched my girl depart
I been looking for a replacement part
the genuine just plays their line
my girlfriend now
is "mine oh mine"

I built myself an electric lady superstar
- with a flick of switch
and a flash on her dial
her dead eyed stare
that latex smile

With LED's all flashing red
her beauty pounding through my head
I sit her up in cool recline
then dress her down for dinner time
by candlelight
(its pure delight
we dance till - daylight)
another kiss is all I ask
her batteries now
are fading fast

To find myself an electric lady superstar
just turn on her switch
she came to life
her plastic smile - cuts like a knife

my electric lady superstar
take her driving
driving Hollywood boulevard
like a superstar
my electric lady superstar
my electric lady superstar
my electric lady superstar

- just turn on the switch
she came to life
her black eyed stare right through my dark

On double A’s
my hopes were raised
her eye lids flickered
from the start!
A charge enough
to break my heart
from plans I’ve made
she looked the part

Since I have watched my girl depart
I been looking for a replacement part
the genuine just plays their line
my girlfriend now
is “mine oh mine”

I built myself an electric lady superstar
- with a flick of switch
and a flash on her dial
her dead eyed stare
that latex smile

With LED’s all flashing red
her beauty pounding through my head
I sit her up in cool recline
then dress her down for dinner time
by candlelight
(its pure delight
we dance till - daylight)
another kiss is all I ask
her batteries now
are fading fast

To find myself an electric lady superstar
just turn on her switch
she came to life
her plastic smile - cuts like a knife

my electric lady superstar
take her driving
driving Hollywood boulevard
like a superstar
my electric lady superstar
my electric lady superstar

Another remix from ElRon's inaugural Peavey Power Slide recording session. While waiting for the Ebay steel guitar purchase to arrive, we decided to ready a reggae song in G or C.

Searching ccmixter for reggae, discovered Clarence Simpson's version of Fishes in the Sea and that pointed to Sassy Girl and Scomber's version, neither of which are in G or C. We settled on Bb and repitched the samples accordingly.

Using drums & percussion from Looperman.com, freesound.org, ccmixter and our sample library plus reggae horns and samples by Clarence and Scomber, we created a backing track for Sassy Girl, Scomber and Clarence's pells.

Sidechaining: A technique that we do not use enough was liberally applied. A compressor on Scomber's bass track was sidechained to the kick drum track except during Clarence's vocals. To reduce the horns stepping on the vocals, the horn (brass section, bone & tuba) track's compressors were sidechained to the vocal track. Same sidechaining approach was used on Elron's guitar and steel tracks during the outro vocals.

Da Voices and Riddim

Scomber - bass, rhythm guitar and vocal
Sassy Girl - vocal
Clarence Simpson - bass (outro) and vocals (break)
ElRon XChile - Steel guitar (Peavy Powerslide tuned G-B-D-G-B-D) and lead guitar (Samick hollow body)
Rhythmboy - cowbell
sterixx - reggae drums (loopeman.com)
carlito - reagge timbales (looperman.com)
51577 - reggaeton drums (looperman.com, inactive user)
CiOnDaddy - reggae dembow (looperman.com)
zuluonedrop - tambourine (freesound.org) - Creative Commons 0 License

"Only Love" is a pop vocal song from Shannon Hurley's album "Switch It On" (arriving June 1st, 2015).

Lyrics:
Only Love Lyrics by Shannon Hurley

Turn out the lights
Open your mind
Try to find
A different side

Its all been the same
What will it take
Clear out the rain
Its time for a change
Theres always a mountain to climb
To take you higher

Only love can make us strong
Nothing else, only love
Hear the sound of our hearts
We live for love, only love

Sometimes we fight
Emotions ignite
But under our pride
Were both on the same side
Im gonna reach you someday
It just takes time

Only love can make us strong
Nothing else, only love
Hear the sound of our hearts
We live for love, only love

Together well shine
Well cast off the night
Theres nothing to hide
Were all on the same ride

Only love can make us strong
Nothing else, only love
Hear the sound of our hearts
We live for love, only love
