I live in Israel, a tiny island of democracy in the region. Watching the unfolding events in Egypt, not too many miles from where , prompted me to do today's somewhat sad cartoon.

Israel at 65

Today is the first of a two-day Israeli holiday.

The first part, today, is Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial Day. A day of remembering and longing for those who died so that the Jewish State could live. It is one of those times when Israel feels more like a family than a country. A day of sadness.

The second part begins at sundown when the country bursts into a celebration of life! It'll be Israel's Birthday!
This year is our 65th. What's planned is day of picnics, barbecues, family outings and parties!
The country is festooned with flags.
Big flags, little flags, flags that clip onto our car windows and hang from our balconies.

Strangely, we remain an island of calm surrounded by a sea of rage, which, for the time being at least, seems not to be directed at us!

Obama and the Middle East

June 2009

-The President's first Presidential visit. In a major speech from Cairo, he reached out to the Moslem world.

December 2010

-Arab Spring riots and protests begin,sweeping from Tunisia,through Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, hitting Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Sudan, Lebanon, and Syria.

I, of course am not saying that the President is, or was, in any way, responsible for the unrest, but I just hope that on this, his second visit to the area, he's not planning to make any major speeches.

Syrian Weapons

The story of Israel's supposed action to prevent sophisticated weapons getting to the murderous terrorist gangs on our borders is nothing new. Neither is the world's shock at our determination to stay alive and to prosper in our little country.

Islamic Colonialism

Islamists are now making their move to capture and colonize sub-saharan Africa.
