The once Proud Nations of Europe

Dry Bones Golden Oldie, by Sali the LSW. (Long Suffering Wife). Here is a Dry Bones cartoon from 2014. It is sad that this is true today, even more, and that now serious antisemitism has become part of the mix. In Ireland the Dublin City Council is re-naming the park that is named after a native son of Ireland and a hero of World War 2 against the Germans, and the 6th President of Israel, Chaim Herzog to be re-named "free Palestine" Park.

EU Bites Apple

Dry Bones, EU, Ireland, Taxes, taxation, Apple, European Union, Europe, technology,According to theWall Street journal:
Apple Ordered by EU to Repay $14.5 Billion in Irish Tax Breaks
EU says tax deal with Ireland allowed Apple to pay almost zero tax on European profits between 2003 and 2014

"The European Union’s antitrust regulator has demanded that Ireland recoup roughly €13 billion ($14.5 billion) of unpaid taxes accumulated over more than a decade by Apple Inc., a move that intensifies a feud between the EU and the U.S. over the bloc’s tax probes into American companies.

The size of the tax demand, which came in a formal decision issued Tuesday, risks further unsettling multinational companies, which face a broader international effort to curb aggressive tax avoidance. But the commission’s decision shows companies could be on the hook for past behavior and potentially be handed big bills for allegedly unpaid back taxes.

The sum is the highest ever demanded under the EU’s longstanding rules that forbid companies from gaining advantages over competitors because of government help." -more

the story:

Sept. 21 (Bloomberg)

Italy’s rating was lowered yesterday by one level on concern that weakening economic growth and a “fragile” government mean the nation will struggle to reduce the euro- region’s second-largest debt burden. Italy was lowered to A from A+ with a negative outlook four months after the company warned of the risk of a downgrade. S&P today cut the creditworthiness of state-owned lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. . . Italy follows Spain, Ireland, Portugal, Cyprus and Greece as euro-region countries whose credit rating have been cut this year" -more
