Jewish Optimism and the Holiday of the Trees

Here is a Dry Bones cartoon about Tu B'Shvat, the holiday of the Trees, from 1997. It falls on February 2nd this year.

I am going to post the whole blog post that Yaakov made about it from January 2014, but I am updating the date of the holiday. There is alink at the bottom to Amazon, where you can look at the book, and his other books, and perhaps buy. It comes in both a kindle and a paperback edition.

Also, many have been asking after my health. So here is a bit of an update about that and the situation in Israel.  I am thankful everyday that I didn't break anything when I fell, and for all of my blessings. It still hurts to move because of my rib injury, but it is much much better. The real aftereffect at the moment is that it feels like it knocked a lot of the "life force" and enthusiasm and energy out of me. But that also is getting much better. My doctor says it is normal with a hard hit at my age and that it just takes a long time.

Here in Israel the last hostage body was recovered and is being buried today. It feels very symbolically significant. We now take off and put away all of our yellow ribbon pins and dog-tag necklaces. We are waiting to see whatever the next stage will bring, and if we will again have missiles flying from Iran soon. The government has made lots of preparations, so hopefully we will be safe. I wish all the best for you. May you have happiness, health and prosperity.  And I am wishing us all a very happy holiday of the trees and a soon to be spring.

Tu B'Shvat is the Jewish "New Year" of the trees. On Tu B'Shvat we plant trees For future generations. Tu is the number 15 in the biblical numbering system (which uses the letters of the Hebrew Alphabet). B' is Hebrew for "in". Shvat is the current month in the Hebrew calendar. So Tu B'Shvat simply means the "15th of Shvat".
This year Tu B'Shvat falls on February 2, this coming Monday.
I chose this "golden oldie" because it illustrates what I believe is a basic Jewish attitude. The blending of short-term pessimism and long-term optimism . . . packaged with a Judaic compulsion to heal the planet.

This would be a good time to check out my book: Trees ...the Green Testament, the front page story it made.

You can go to my Amazon author's page to see Trees, the Green Testament.
There you can "Look Inside" and if you like it (And why wouldn't you?) you can buy it and/or any of a book-shelf of other Dry Bones books at amazon.com/author/kirschen
In the UK it's www.bit.ly/drybonesbooks

The Optimism of Youth

North Korea, Kim Jong Un, youth, missiles, bombs, optimism,If you think that the dimwit in today's cartoon is Alfred E. Newman from Mad Magazine, you'd be wrong. Harvey Kurtzman, a cartoonist, and the original editor and creator of Mad first spotted the image on a postcard pinned to the office bulletin board of the editor of Ballantine Books . The image had, for years been used on comic postcards. In 1965 Mad was sued for copyright infringement by the widow of cartoonist Harry Spencer Stuff. She claimed it was a copy of Stuff’s caricature “The Original Optimist,” also known as “Me-worry?”, which he had copyrighted in 1914.
Mad Magazine argued that it had copied the picture from various materials dating back to 1911 and won the case.

I and my LSW (Long Suffering Wife) are in need of financial help.
Unfortunately there's no one we can sue for anything.

the Smiling Optimist

common enemy : Dry Bones cartoon, Kirschen, optimism, Iran,Shuldig, Israel, war, violence, Tehran, Mideast, Middle East,
The news has been really depressing.Jewish soldiers beat settlers, settler terrorists murder an Arab baby, the violent knife attack against the gay parade in Jerusalem by an ultra-orthodox Jew, the disastrous appeasement of Iran, the spreading success of ISIS, the continued toying with Jonathan Pollard. Everything seems to be getting worse! Sigh! I wanted to be optimistic but couldn't, the result was today's effort.

A Positive Attitude

War, economic crisis, Terrorism, Pessimism, Optimism, Bailout, Future, lsw kirschen : Dry Bones cartoon. According to the LSW (Long Suffering Wife) I am wildly and irrationally optimistic about the future, I on the other hand, am constantly trying to pry her out of what she sees as "realism".

After a "philosophical discussion" between the two of us in which I futilely tried to get her to see the current situation with a "positive attitude", I decided to draw this two-guys-talking cartoon.

I hope that she, and others like her, will find this cartoon amusing, if not funny.

The Happy Optimist

Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Jordan, Islamists, Islamism, Democracy, Media, Optimism, Mubarak, Gaddafi: Dry Bones cartoon.
As an "Artist in Residence" at YIISA (the Yale Initiative for the Interdisciplinary Study of Antisemitism) I've been studying a specific set of unique image codes. (For a video of my presentation at Yale on these codes of Antisemitism click on Secret Codes)

These codes are used to spread viral Jew-hatred and are the focus of my upcoming May 2011 tour. If your church or synagogue would like to host an appearance/lecture please contact Rabbi Pesach Lerner at
plerner@youngisrael.org.

Note photos of these codes in "Pro Democracy" demonstrations

Below: Codes in anti-Mubarak poster in Egypt:
1. "Jewish" star
2. Blood dripping from corner of mouth
3. Vampire-like fangs
4. Demonic Ears

Below: Codes in an anti-Gaddafi poster in Libya:
1. Demonic Horns
2. Blood dripping from corner of mouth
3. The "Jewish" star all over the poster
4. Use of Swastikas (which have evolved to mean Israel!!)

Oh and about the plight of the Christians, there's this, just in from CAMERA:

Coptic Christians Killed by Egyptian Military – Will the Blackout Continue?

"Coptic Christians in Egypt who are hoping that major news outlets in the United States are going to shine a light on the recent attack they endured in Helwan and their ongoing protests in Cairo have good reason to wonder exactly what is going on.

Their story is just not being told in the U.S. . . . People who rely on traditional media outlets in the U.S. for their information about the Middle East on will know very little about the attack on a church in Sool on Saturday and the ongoing failure of the Egyptian military to protect Copts in Egypt." -more

King Hussein's Legacy (1999)

Peace with Jordan(1999) Dry Bones cartoon - .
Today's Golden Oldie is from 1999.

Last night I was a guest at the official celebration of the National Day of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan which was held in Tel Aviv. The national anthems of Jordan and Israel were played. The assembled diplomats, journalists, businessmen, and "notables" chatted and enjoyed the food and drink. It was all very civilized. In his address, the Jordanian Ambassador to Israel noted that ten years had passed since the current monarch, King Abdullah II had ascended to the throne.

When I got back home from the reception I dug through my archives to find today's Golden Oldie. So here we are, ten years later, and the question asked in the cartoon has been answered. We had indeed made peace, not just with King Hussein, but with his kingdom.

In this case, at least, our optimists were right!

Optimist Pessimist

Optimism Pessimism : Dry Bones cartoon.
Not knowing what the future will bring can be exciting, even exhilarating and challenging. These days, not knowing what the future will bring is starting to be scary. Everybody I know is speculating, so I did this Optimist Pessimist cartoon.
* * *
I don't know which I am. How about you. Are you feeling optimistic, pessimistic, or just plain confused? And how do you think the future will view our current crisis?
