Hobby Round up Week 17

A busy week of building models, with a little bit of painting.

We'll start with Simon who has been on a construction mission.

We have some Chaos Warriors, converted to Khorne using the left overs from some Juggernauts

He also managed to get some paint on some more Terminators

Some of our Guild Ball Kickstarter figures turned up, here are Simon's Masons, ball and goal

Simon loves a bit of Wild West action, his Salute purchases have increased his gang count to two

And finally a Doctor for Dead Mans Hand, another figure from Salute.

Frazer has been busy finishing off some more models for Dave, we'll hopefully see the finished package next week. This weekend as well as being the very generous taxi driver to Salute, he has been sorting out his Guild Ball figures, one team for him and one for Matt

With no Guild Ball figures to distract him Neil has been painting Soviets. The picture may be blurry but I can confirm that these figures will allow Neil to field a fully painted Chain of Command force.

And finally, Chris has been painting some Drop Zone Commander figures for Dave, and will have a finished set of pictures next week. In the mean time here are some Mortician Guild Ball figures that he has built.

Come back later this week for our Salute report, with so many pictures, you'll think you are there!

Hobby Round up Week 16

Welcome one and all! A quiet one this week.

Neil has been busy out in the sun taking ropey pictures of his offerings.

First of all we have a some Soviet armour, which I'm sure Matt will be looking forward to facing in their upcoming game of Chain of Command

Neil has also been testing some colours on his Trolls. He picked up a load cheap off eBay a while back and has finally got his brush to them. If you squint a bit and tilt your head, you may be able to make out what he's done!

Chris has continued to chip away at some Drop Zone Commander for Dave. The walkers and tanks are done and the Drop Ships have their base coat of green done. Still quite a bit to do to these, and some infantry bases to follow.

See you next week, after some of us return from Salute

Wednesday War - Chain of Command Op Spa

This game sees the first of 'game four' in our Chain of Command campaign as the Germans attempt to capture Spa in Belgium

In the first three games the SS commanded by Matt made short work of the American platoon commanded by Elliot.  In the Centre the Soviets ably commanded by Neil repulsed the initial attack by Chris's German Heer platoon and continued to push them back towards the start line.  In the south a bitter series of actions took place on the outskirts of Meiz  with the British finally pushing back Frazer's Panzergrenadiers

Prior to this weeks (game four), campaign game was played.  There were two requests for redeployment, the first by the Americans was held up at HQ and the second was accepted by the German commander and pulled the battered Heer platoon to a quieter sector.  The unstoppable advance of the SS was to meet a delaying action by the Soviets under the command of Neil.

The soviets were holding a tree line in the west and the SS were advancing down the road from the farm in the east.

The battlefield

The Germans start deploying along the road

The soviets try to push the Germans back hard and fast with armour but a long range shot from the panzershrek team knock out the KV-1

A few points of shock start to build on the lead German squad.

The HE fire from the T34 forces the lead squad to fall back - unfortunately they run through the 'shrek team and dump 5 points of shock  causing them to fall back as well

As SS reserves arrive the German commander calls up his Flammpanzer to shift the Soviets that are arriving to support the T34

The Germans lob smoke grenades to cover their position as a second squad arrives to move up the left flank

A hasty barrage lands amid the soviet position, fortunately for the Russians most of the their units are unaffected but the reduced LOS prevents the T34 from causing much trouble

The soviets are wisely holding the line waiting for the SS to cover the open killing ground

The SS move into the wheat field  trying to get a base of fire going

Fanatical the SS are, suicidal they are not and they hold position  waiting for the Forward Observer to shift the barrage onto the soviet infantry

Morale in the Soviet postion is still remarkably high

The Flammpanzer gets into range and prepares to fire

Unconcerned the reds swig vodka and shout rude words at the SS

Whoosh!  The first time a flame tank has been in action a timely use of a CoC dice for the SS
The results are horrific and the morale takes a big knock dropping to 5
With the KV-1 burning it is up to the T34 commander to take action
Having slowly edge to the flank the commander is now in a position to take a shot

Lucky for the Soviets it's a good shot and the Flammpanzer is knocked out.

The German moral was on 10 with the soviets on 5 and it looked like trouble for the Russians.  Neil was fortunate to get 3 turns in a row and remove most of the shock from the burning squad before they fled the table and the moral affected the command dice.  With reluctance the SS withdraw.  Whilst their morale is still high the casualties are mounting and another battle is just over the horizon

The seemingly unstoppable advance by the SS towards Spa has been stopped for the time being.

Will the soviets dig in or counter attack?  The British have the same choice to make before they fight battle 4 and the Americans are on the attack for the first time since the campaign started.  Casualties are starting to have an impact on the other German and American platoons.

Chain of Command Campaign Pictures

Its our second week in our new gaming location, and this week we had two tables of Chain of Command as our campaign continued.

Below are some shots from the game between Binx's Germans and Lordybloke's Soviets...

The Germans, near their jump off point, cover the flank from the safety of the ruins

A full table shot as the Soviets close in on the Germans position

The Soviets cover the advance of their compatriots further up the battlefield

The Germans hunker down in the graveyard, one foolish soldier attempts to get a better view

The Soviets right flank, a mixture of painted and err... brown warriors

Chain of Command - 15mm Soviet Tank Riders

Whilst in the middle of painting my Fallschirmjager platoon for Chain of Command in 28mm, nearly done, I was asked by Binx if I had any spare soviets for a CoC platoon in 15mm.  As a typical example of a gamer/hoarder I did.  The trouble is that set me to thinking about whether I should have a platoon, there was a whole box of Plastic Soldier Company in my 'to be painted immediately' pile (been there 18 months) so I cracked it open and put together a tank rider platoon and an infantry squad from the support list.  Which still leaves plenty for Binx and some left overs.

I went for a very quick solution regards painting; primed with a 30/70 mix of Vallejo German yellow and white primer and then blocked in the trousers, hats etc with reasonable colours I had to hand.  A wash and a coat of varnish and they are done.  These are not amazing but I have completed them in about 3 hours.

The Fallschirmjager just need the bases doing but now a box of 15mm British infantry is winking at me...

Chain of Command Campaign - Turn 2

Turn two of the Chain of Command campaign - Objective Spa.  The German movements are in red and the Allies are in blue.  At the top of the map the 12th SS push forward against the unprepared American forces.  In the centre the Panzergrenadiers have been pushed back beyond their start positions and in the south the Axis initial failure has been met with success as another assault finally succeeds

Chain of Command Spa Campaign - Turn 1

We have started a Chain of Command campaign using a map covering the Belgium town of Spa.  This is a fictitious setup to include all players and their respective platoons.  This is the outcome of turn one.  The basic setup is the failed Ardennes offensive.

Battlegroup Kursk - After Action Report

The second half of the game was played the following week but I have been too busy or distracted to post the remainder of the report - scant that it is - I have it here now.

The Panzer Ace advances to get a better shot at the T34 he has been duelling with.  The supply truck unpins ready to resupply as required.  At this point the German commander is nearly Winchester rounds

Battlegroup Kursk - Middle of the Action Report

Here we are midway through a 500 (ish) point game between Lordybloke's Soviets, veterans of over a dozen battles and Ellioto's Panzergrenadiers in there second only battle.
Bottom left sees the Soviet entry onto the battlefield, the Soviet commander skulking in his Gaz Jeep hoping that the artillery will leave him be.  A diminished soviet tank rider squad is pinned by their objective.  The German Panzer Ace 'Double Top' in the Stug III arrives in the corner top right and blasts away with no effect.

Battlegroup Kursk Campaign Game First Charge at Hill 252.2

After much procrastination Lordy and I finally got round to starting the campaign in the BGK book.  We are playing the historical scenarios with the forces provided.  The aim was to play fully painted but in the end Lordy had to borrow some T34’s that were just built.  The Germans were fully painted.  Smug

We set up an 8x6 table and played over two weeks but even so we failed to reach the break point of either army and were unable to leave the table set up for a third week.  We had a great game although turn 2 for the Germans was awful but they were given a reprieve when the Soviet turn 3 was nearly as bad.  The final turn for the Germans saw 6 x T34's destroyed another pinned along with the soviet Senior commander.  I have put some captions on the photographs below.

The Germans are deployed around the barn near the T junction – objective 1 with a platoon and 2 Pak40’s dug in.  The other platoon and Pak40 are deployed in the farm in the centre objective 2.  Hill 252.2, objective 3, is outside the German deployment zone but Tiger 313 is at the base ready to advance.  The remaining objective 4 is held by a Panzer IV G platoon and Tiger 311.  The Battlegroup commander and another platoon hold the centre ready to respond to the soviet attack.  5 T34’s are central ready to advance on the farm.

Battlegroup Kursk Battle Report

Neil and I played our second game of BGK last night.  We had previously played the clash of reconnaissance scenario which allocates units for each side.  This time we opted to try 500 points and a scenario.

I believe both Neil and I have an idea of what we might like to take in our forces and it was only once we started list construction the subtle limits and restrictions that push you towards a combined arms list were fully realised.  In a good way.

Hey, You, Get Offa my Kursk...

Firstly, all hail!!
The camera charger has been found. It somehow got buried under a pile of Christmas presents......
Yes, really.

Anyway
Following the Zedmeisters's post I thought I'd follow up with my own Battlegroup progress with some badly shot pics!

Here's the whole recce company awaiting paint etc. This includes weapon/support teams that have been based for FOW that will translate into BGK just fine (with the odd "wound" counter")
 And then a progress pic.
One squad done (a second is close behind) and the AT gun.
I think I've over weathered my BA10.....

Teeny Tiny.....

The Pontipines are friends of mine, although they're very small......

The Teeny Tiny Pontipines, I love em! I could watch those little red fellas mucking about for hours. Waving at their neighbours, the Wottingers or eating their tea on the Ninkynonk or losing their children and not even worrying.
All Brilliant!
I won't go into the sub text of the Pontipines acting out the Soviet oppression of Poland (the Wottingers) through dance and hide and seek I'll let you draw your own conclusions (its all there....)

Anyway this nonsense diatribe is simply a device to make further use of the words "teeny tiny".
From teeny tiny Pontipines to teeny tiny tanks!
Another day and another game/venture. I'm not sure who's to blame for this one but certainly Zed hasn't helped!
Somewhere along the line a great idea was born to play some WW2 games in 6mm. Kursk being mentioned as a back drop.
Zed bought a few 6mm German testers from GHQ (very nice) then Skytrex sent out a 20% off mailer and my goose was cooked (mongo was baked?)!

My order arrived today. Here's what I have, from left to right; T34/85s, SU100s, sturmovik, IS2s, T34/76 (2 turret variants. The differences really show up at this scale!)

Oh Aye, More AA eh?

Once more the camera has appeared before me! I dash to take pics before it fades back into the ether....

Since my last AA post I've been planning to get my AA company back up to Red Bear minimum status.
Finally that has happened!
AA company ready to blast Luftwaffe out of the sky. With an impressive 32" range when firing skyward they should keep the reds safe from too much death from above?!!
