Adrian's May Rank 'n File month - The Kwae Karr orcs (328 points)

Rank and File month #4

King F'yar's own tribe, the Kwae Karr orcs, must not fall behind the other tribes gathered for the battle against the Grand League. On the contrary, they should make an example utterly crushing the crossroad settlement of Lind Way.
King F'yar gave orders to one of his chieftains, Magyar Ironfist, to utterly crush the resistance in Linden Way.

However, such a menial task is nothing but an insult. Magyar is made for something more than wacking petty villagers in their homes. He should complete the objective fast and with few casualties, as if F'yar is killed or something bad happened to him at Orc's Drift, surely someone with a powerfull army should arise as the next king of the orc tribes...

I truly wanted to paint this unit. I think that, along Harboth's orcs, these are the most iconic regiments ever produced for the orcs. While I want to play them as regular orcs, I gave everyone of them the crossbows at their back.

Gudruk the champion is not truly armed with a magic sword but the evil lookin two handed sword and the runes demanded it to be painted as something wrong is contained inside that piece of metal. Magyar miniature blend with the rest of the unit pretty well and I think i'll deploy him as a regular boy when I use them in a battle as a normal unit.

Sadly I couldn't get my hand in additional troopers and I didn't want to convert the initial 18 or so from the original box. So there is no Kwae Karr banner as for now.

Look! I finally broke the shield curse and could finnish all the shields for the entire unit! yeah, that includes additional shields for the rest of the 20 or so. While I have to expand up to 30 for the campign I'm aiming at a realistic objective for this year after the challenge.

Ruglud got his shield too. Love how everything went for those shields. However, is not that easy to put a evil face in them, so I managed to include some messages here and there instead as well as the Kwae Karr symbol (a camel dragon? a jabberwork? the bastard child of a cockatrice and a dragon?)

Magyar Ironfist itself. Lovely miniature. Its face is covered by the arms in a pose about to give someone a bad day, and it is a same because the face has a great expression difficult to photograph as it is.

But wait THERE IS MORE

I have the oportunity to purchase the old citadel Legolas which can act as Erdolas (or degraded as Herndil) for ttrpg and make the iconic photograph of the campaign box. If I have Erdolas (or Herndil)... I should have some wood elves to accompany him.

I do not plan to own an entire wood elf army but I wanted to have a small unit mostly based on Scarloc archers, that can be boost up to 25 with a batch of monopose wood elves. which I purchased for this challenge. And that way I also can convert someone to have the iconic banner of the campaign book.
Also, despite not having 100% all the units of the campaign, with the wood elf small unit it gives me the opportunity to proxy the different troops and replace some of them for a good pictures. So I can do an entire report with the proper miniatures deployed.

In an extremely productive month, I got both Erdolas and some elves painted.

I didn't plan this unit originally and while I mix tones here and there, I do not know for now if they should have some pattern in the capes as in my high elves or leave them as they are. But at least it was fun to paint some wood elves for the first time.

Oh, and I could finnish also their shields just in time!

Lastly, as I got free from my curse at least for the time being and I was pretty motivated, I got the shields of the other units (except for the poor four dwarves from Uther company, I do not had time to replace the shield that desintegrated).

And finnish also the bases, now that I've repaired my homemade applicator.

Woah, what a month.

With both units finnished that makes:
Magyar Ironfist + 14 orcs with shield = 170 points

Erdolas + 9 wood elfs with shield = 158 points

For the next entry, the Kwae Karr orcs and let's hope for some surprise I got in the mail.

Until then,

Tom's Goblins and Orcs: Rank and File #2

This month, February, shalt be the month of the wolf...  As with war machines, I really struggle with anything calvary-like, so it's a massive relief to have these done!
I think it's because I'm never quite comfortable with painting them all glued together, so I have to paint them in two parts, wolf and rider. Which I don't like 😂
Annnnyway...

This wolf has got a bit of blood on him. What a good boy.

The shield design is just some thing super simple. Channelling that rosengarten_paints_black - instagram - energy, (although to a much less accomplished state!)

On the same  tip, I gave the wolves pupils. I'd usually go for just red, buuuut...

And here's all five of them together.

Please excuse the dark pic. Bit of a last minute photoshoot!

Flushed with success I moved straight onto the orc chariot. Best get it out the way whilst motivation strikes!  It came in its original hardshell blister - a lovely swap with highland_painting (instagram) for some earlier era orcs 🙂

Here's the two crew.

And I pinned the front bit that saddles the wolves onto the chariot, and then pinned the wheels into the base.

And here it is! The boys are a bit side on, it's super cramped in that chariot!

Getting da bossez shield to fit was a pain too! It's why I chose the smallest on I could 🙂

Of course they've nailed a falcon or other bird of prey to it. Probably to taunt the hated elf.

If you look super closely you can see the pin poking out of the bottom of the chariot, from the orcs foot!

Hopefully the last thing you see after encountering da rampaging boyz!

And the shot of them all together agin :)

Here's the links back through the challenge:

Adrian January rank and file: Vile rune and Severed Hand orcs (193 points)

Rank & File month #1

Grashak Kra supports the minions of the Severed Hand tribe massacring the dwarf garrison in the mines of Ashak Rise outpost.

The Kwae Karr orcs were not alone in their revenge. After King F’yar blow against the Grand League killing their king, other tribes started shifting their opinion of their previous overlord. Given that he could strike at the heart of their enemies, it may redeem him in the eyes of the other chieftains. This may be the opportunity for the wished revenge against the pale faced races.

The Vile Rune orcs stormed first in the outskirts of Fendal Forest. The Kacha Pass guarded by a small garrison of elves won’t be an easy target. But that didn’t stop the savagery of the orcs.

Fangor Gripe has another objective in mind as well. It is not only necessary to move swift to met with the other orcs tribes at Orc’s Drift. The Kacha Pass garrison has a half orc spy. It may have interesting information about the movements and commanders of the pale-skinned armies. He also know that Fangor Gripe was absent the day of reckoning at the last Goblin Wars. None shall know this secret if he want to keep his position and maybe don’t end with a dagger in the bowels.

This month I played safe just to see if I’m kicking again. After a year of not painting at the pace needed for a challenge, I needed to have a little practice or give a measure to my limits.
I painted the rest of the Vile Rune Orcs I need for the scenario and also want for my army. I’m pleased with the results except for a lack of evil faces in the shields that I totally forgot to paint during the month, so maybe I come back to any of the shields to have a little fun later on the challenge. I am undecided, because all the shields of these orcs are textured.
Lovely miniatures the C15 and Fantasy Tribes orcs, they’re my favourites.

I also added Grashak Kra, the hobhound handler of the Severed Hand Orcs, unfortunately without the hobhounds for now. As well as Silas Meel the half orc spy jailed by the elves at Kacha Pass.

Lastly, I can add another troll to my unit of oldhammer orcs, and none other than the now tiny Rock Giant, Guthrum Mane.
He has some alcohol problems and I reflected that in the colours of his face.

In terms of points.
10 Vile Rune orcs, including a level 5 chieftain Fangor Gripe: 128 points
Guthrum Mane (here as a single troll): 65 points
Gives a total of 193 points, 13 miniatures.

That’s for now, next month we will continue with the Linde Way militia probably.
Until then,

Jaakko and Rugluk: Season II - The Reinforcements - Introduction

Rugluk Backstabba stood on a ridge of broken stone and looked down at his army.

It didn’t take long. There weren’t many left.

A handful of orcs leaned on chipped axes, arguing about whose fault it was they were hungry. Goblins huddled near a fire that wasn’t really burning. A pump wagon sat on its side, crew gone, probably eaten.

Rugluk bared his teeth. “Dis ain’t an army,” he growled. “Dis a bad joke.”

No one laughed.

The siege, the mutiny, the empty fort-it had all taken its toll. Some had wandered off. Others had challenged him and lost. A few had challenged him and won, at least enough to run away afterward. Fear carried only so far when there was no loot and too much marching.

Rugluk clenched his fist. He was still alive. Boyz will always find the real boss.

“Dey’ll come,” he muttered. “Dey always do.”

A goblin scout scurried up the slope, panting. “Boss! Found tracks”

Rugluk’s eye twitched. “Orcs?”

The goblin hesitated. “Uh… not exactly.”

Rugluk grinned anyway.

“Well, I ain’t picky.”

And so another season of OWAC is about to begin! And, as promised, the second season of painting Orcs and Goblins for the Horde of Rugluk.

The theme of season IX is to draw inspiration from Oldhammer artwork. I knew this beforehand, and since I’m working on a multi-season project, I already snuck this picture into the introduction post for season VIII:

Or rather, a part of this larger artwork from Warhammer Armies:

I love everything about it and hope to capture the style of this orc horde in my slowly materializing army-to-be. I’ve also snuck in some smaller details that fit this year’s theme into last season-but there will be more of them next month (as I’m not writing this from home and forgot to take pictures). More small surprises are also hopefully still to come. Anyway, here are some photos of the unpainted models waiting for their turn!

This unit will feature two banners, so the fellow in the middle seems to be a rival of Rugluk.

I painted some Goblin Fanatics last year, but I saved my favourites for this season. As far as I know, all the different pre-slotta sculpts will be featured. I can’t imagine a scenario where I’d actually need so many Fanatics, but I enjoy painting them.

And here they are in a list:

That’s still more than I can manage to paint in one season, but we’ll see.

If I have time, I might also finish these Goblin Wolf Riders that I didn’t manage to complete last season. They won’t be included in the model count or points, of course, since they already have some season VIII paint on them.

Good luck to all of our challengers! See you next month!
