Workbench update

Some slightly modded Otherworld trolls.

A lot of stuff lying around screaming for attention. I order to get the blog moving again, I'll try to regularly update with some stuff I'm working on.

I use the Otherworld orcs as RQ dark trolls, some slight adaption of the snout is in order.

Do Morokanths have a weewee?

This one certainly does!
I think this Morokanth is finished, I'm gonna let it harden, basecoat, and then paint it up over the weekend before I start on the next one. This one, by the way, is a male Morokanth.

I know, I'm vulgar :) But Bif the Morokanth is happy!

Test building for the Big Rubble

Made out of Hirst blocks
In parallel with making buildings for New Pavis, I'm also preparing a set of ruins for the Rubble. Or at least I intend to. Here's my first attempt, still a WIP,of a nice ruin in Manside. I'm gonna go for a mix of a few styles, ranging from egyptian to babylonian, I hope it'll look convincing. I'm gonna roughen this one up a bit, and then paint it and see what it looks like.

New Pavis update

Far from finished (The rubble is gonna be a particularly hard task :D) but here is an update with some hills I got at crisis, a few palm trees, and some of the buildings I am working on.  The Pavis temple is basecoated as well, I'm hoping to be able to finish some more stuff this week.  I am particularly happy with how the new buildings turned out.

Custom PC miniatures

My players like playing with miniatures: they need to have visual clues when roleplaying, and most of them also play miniature games like Warhammer and Malifaux.  They like to have miniatures fitting their character, and preferably both a mounted and unmounted version.  Now there are some manufacturers that offer a few of those, but nowhere near a full range.  It's even harder if you're not playing traditional medieval.  So often the only resource is modding.

One of my players' characters is a Riverfolk Noble, so we were looking for a mix between a gypsy, a mongol and a saracen, something along those lines :)  We found a Reaper rider that more or less looked the part, be it a bit modest, and a Reaper foot figure with a cape and scimitar, although he wore armor and a helmet, which he didn't want.

Decapitated the foot figure, prepared a head, and repositioned the lance arm on the rider

So I took out the ole Dremel and my huge set of mini-lathes and drills, as well as a big blob of grey stuff, and I adapted the miniatures as requested.  Talk about spoiled players :)

Added the head to the footie, sculpted the scarf and headband, and sculpted the shoulder pads on the rider.  On the right the sword which teh rider will have holstered behind his saddle.

State of the workbench

The miniatures based and assembled!
After having worked through most of my remaining Lance And Laser RQ stuff, I have finished cleaning, assembling and basing most of my remaining Mad Knight miniatures. As soon as I have the room and time I'll spray the basecoat on, and I can start painting the miniatures.

The large left part - on the paper - is a lot of trolls and big broo, as well as four great troll skeletons. The right row, top to bottom: Red Mask assassins (6), imperial bodyguard (6) and little broo (6), with two female Humakti and a Humakti Cross on the right edge of the picture!

Pavis style buildings

As the start of our Pavis campaign approaches, things start getting hectic. I made an inventory of my Glorantha Miniatures Pipeline. About 100 unprepped/semiprepped miniatures, 100 more prepped and based miniatures, and about 150 in various stages of progress. About 20 are more or less finished, but need that last bit of TLC, mostly a coat of dull varnish.

Another important part is terrain. We have been diligently casting hirst, and I hope to finish quite a bit of caves and caverns by next weekend, but we also need Pavis style buildings, including the test building on the picture here, but also temples, clan houses, all in a style somewhere in the middle of ancient greece, egypt, and Conan's Cimmeria.

A third project that is underway, is our Pavis campaign wiki, introducing Pavis, Prax, the protagonists, player characters, and a lot more. For copyright reasons, we decided to keep this wiki private, so we can share maps and snippets of pdf between players, but once the PC descriptions are finished, I'll post these on the hiording blog and tdm.

Ben the great troll

Ben the great troll.  You should see his brother Jerry!
Here's one of the miniatures I have received from Madknight Casting last week.  I have a lot of stuff still on my work table that I'm gonna finish first, but I just wanted to show the impressive quality of the miniature.  Plus, finding a real Glorantha troll is not so easy, I'm very glad the choice got so much bigger!

For comparison I put a Reaper assassin next to our friend Ben.

Workbench update

When painting updates seem to occur only now and then, it's more often than not a case of 'finishing a bunch of stuff at once'.  Typically, I have several series of miniatures that get rotated, and because of that, it looks like nothing happens at all.  Here's a quick update of a bunch of not-finished mini's I hope to finish anyday soon.
Some LAnce and Laser Bison Riders and a rider and mount.

Lunar mounted guard, some BTD, some Warlord

Some slaves and servants, an assassin, and a healer, Warlord and Reaper

Puppet Wars Executioner

Been painting this little puppet wars Executioner for a club demo next week.  I've been painting some more details since I took the picture, but the general idea is clear.

Air Rune Shields

I clipped off the pin on the viking shields and cut off the remnants, repaired the damage with some putty and evened things out with a pencil shaper and some vaseline oil.
Then I took some tries at putting an air rune on the shields.  One is a little rough, but the second and third attempt worked really well.

Some new miniatures from The Foundry

Brave adventurers wielding axes.  In front, some Orlanthi Alynxes
I have 3 KR cases full of RuneQuest miniatures, but there a quite a few players who suddenly went all axe-y on me, and it turned out I have only one character wielding the one-handed battle axe and buckler shield.  So I promptly dispatched an order for more of those, and I added a trio of Lynxes - big fat lynxes too - for Orlanthi that want a traditional pet, and, later, if and when they make it to Rune Lord, for their allied spirit.  The Lynxes do look like pets that have been overfed for a few years, rather than a lean predator, but I can live with that.

Making a second floor for my inn

Yellow Polystyrene, a stump pencil, some black acryl, and a ruler.
Although I was unable to start a barfight Saturday, I'm not despairing: I have started work on the second floor of the Inn, the idea is to make a wooden floor, and then add some room walls, some nice beds from Scotia Grendel are underway to finish things off.

Working on the Grey Dog Inn

I'm a firm proponent of visual clues when Role Playing.  The player's imagination can and must be stimulated, but I prefer to have control over the look of the scenes I tell about.  Then the player can use his imagination on just about everything else in the story.  I just like to have a common starting point for my story, so I make a few houses and other buildings, and in this case I am working on the interior of what I believe will become a key building in my campaign: the Grey Dog Inn.
To be honest, what I am working on is more like a common denominator room interior with lots of room for customization: for the Grey Dog Inn I am preparing a private room and a staircase, as well as a cellar.  In other cases, this may become a library hall, or a brothel, or even a king's hall.  I made the thing from a 20 mm thick piece of green isolation board, which I carved in with a blunt pencil and lots of round and square  objects to create the 3D feel.  I then rpimed in black, and brushed up to medium grey in 3 or 4 thin leyers.  The result is fine: leightweight and sturdy, and looking real good for something that took 2 x 30 minutes.  Then I cut 3 mm foamboard to size to make the walls, glued with contact glue, and used wide masking tape to finish things off quickly: another hour.  I already had a lot of furniture ready, here is one set-up I have been trying.  I'll be making the top floor and cellar as well, already ordered lovely little beds from scotia grendel!

The workbench

The downside to batch painting is that it looks as if you're not doing much.  I have a magnetic board with 30 odd miniatures on it, that I am painting in batch mode:  All the base colours are painted in series, and it isn't until the miniatures are almost finished that I start taking them aside one by one to finish up the highlights and washes, details and so on.  So here is the current board:
Leftish to right (picking out a few figs) you see Reapers Fafnir, Holay Warrior, Dara Happan, a dryad, an Esrolian, an Orlanth priest, a Merchant, The red emperor himself, a gang of Dragonewts, a Babeester Gori, a Healer, female Orlanthi, Vingan, a few I'm not sure about, then Jar Eel standing at the back, some Lunars, some Satyrs, a clan chief, King Broyan, and so on.  I have 3 more like this ready for painting, a total of about 130 new RuneQuest miniatures.
The next batches are more troop-y: a bunch of Lunars, Dara Happan, Yelmalians, clan militia, slingers, archers, villagers, nobles, and so on.

Some stuff on the workbench

Some gobbo's on wolves that will have to act up as Gloranthan Tusk Riders.
The Otherworld centaur Patrol looks great.
Two dragonewts on demi birds, currently getting some base color on.

My modified APC

Here is the first stage of the painted APC for my Shocktroopers army.  I still need to put up some scifi decals and do the weathering and varnishing, but the idea is there already.

Prize won at Nikfest arrived

I got me this nice Russian APC from Shaun from Sands Models.  It is gonna be modified in order to serve as a support vehicle for the shock troopers.  The commander is already taking a look at the new toy!

Spriggan Spugs on the workbench

IMG_2762
Ik ben begonnen aan de Spugs van Spriggan.  Eerst moeten ze allemaal gemonteerd worden, en op ronde magnetische bases gezet worden.
I started converting the Spugs on to magnetic round bases.  They look fantastic, and are going to be a joy to paint.
