WFRP 4th Edition - Inputting your Character on Roll20

 Hi All,

As a follow on from character generation, we have a situation where we needed to put our characters onto the platform we re playing on. For our group that is Roll20. Our GM has gone ahead and purchased the system specific add ons and there is a digital character sheet involved.

To be fair, all digital character sheets have their own idiosyncrasies. Based on the system and the person who built its interpretation of the rules/ character creation process.

So I'll try to forensically rehash what I did for my character. I also helped one of our group input his, perhaps I will go over that one as well.

Alright I took a bunch of screenshots, lets see if we can make sense of this thing.

So we start on the "MAIN" page button/tab. It's a little weird in that you input values into the blue shaded cells, but not all of them. So I entered Name, Species, Class, Age, Height Hair and Eyes. I think I also input my initial characteristics. I am not totally sure, but I think we found out you had to click on the header text to activate the cell for entry. I guess it's a good way to prevent inadvertently changing your values, but it was frustrating. I think when I input my movement of 4 it calculated and filled the other two. I also input my Resilience and Fate.

Although the timing is a bit off, ie I had to go to the advanced tab for some things first, I entered Talents  and specific advanced skills. You just hit the little plus sign. If you need to delete something you need to hit the edit (pen) symbol.

Just showing the bottom of the main page.

Now we're at the "ADVANCES" page. You don't have to re-enter the top part with your name etc.  You definitely need to click on the column text to be able to put in your advances. As a Human I got 5. You also need to input your career Skills and Talents and distribute your 40(?) points or whatever it is. I can't remember at the moment.

At the bottom of the page is your Species Talents and skills. Now I thought you could play with the bonus values, like the career skills, but you cannot. You have a choice of +3 or +5 only and you get 3 of each. I also found out when I helped another player that if you click on a +3 or +5 you can't seem to remove it. Not sure why that is.

Here we are in the "COMBAT" tab.

Your wounds are calculated for you from your stats.

Trappings, armor and weapons are all pretty self explanatory. The one weird thing is that if you wear something it's Encumbrance no longer counts. Seems odd. You of course have to wear armor and/or shield to get the armor point fields to populate. I'm not sure if I put the dagger damage in correctly or not, but I think so. Oh and wealth you just input.

Hopefully that helps if you are struggling to get your character into roll20. If you have any tips or hacks for doing it better, please let me know.

Happy hobbying.

WFRP 2nd Ed - Shopping in Talagaad

Hi All,

Busy jumping around from topic to topic, what else is new? I've failed to finish my research into basing and have been messing around with world and language building software. More on that later, much later.

Two weeks ago we had a WFRP session scheduled, but Andrew and I couldn't make it so Jason and Bryan boldly ventured forth to get the lay of the land and try and convert some of their cash into useful items.

We'll start with a scene from Dreams of Araby, where the group figures out who can play which instrument.

Shopping in Talagaad

It was a warm early Autumn day, Vincent was half asleep on the roof of the coach as the rest of the party dozed in and out of slumber inside. The effects of the black lotus seem to be slowly fading away. The coach started to slow to a trot and a familiar knock came from the front. “We have arrived.” Alysia called from the front of the coach. Sally hopped out of the coach to get a look at the surroundings.

The sight was depressing. Not a half kilometer away sat the over populated slums of Talagaad. The breeze carried a foul stench of squalor. “I turn around here.” Alysia said again as she dismounted and started with unloading the baggage. “You should change your clothing. Looking as you do might not be a good thing, no. I have change of clothing for you all.”

Lukas and Leopold dismounted and began gathered there gear as Vincent handed down what was on the roof of the coach before climbing down himself. “So where are we meeting this contact.” Vincent said to no one in particular.

“He will find you.” Alysia replied. Everyone changed over to common empire clothing and the party made their way towards Talagaad. The impressive sight of the Talabheim wall and fortress atop the mighty crater was somewhat lessened by the mood of the town outside. Refugees from Kislev and what we would soon find out to be Hockland filled the streets. We made our way through the crowd nearing the center.

“I need to exchange some of these crowns for something a bit more useful.” Vincent said. “Perhaps we should ask for directions to a merchant.” Up until this time there was little in the way of markets that one would expect from a town this side. Just rows of hovels and shady buildings. The flow of people lead the party to a toll bridge. It seemed to be the only bridge that crossed the river that split Talagaad in two. The crowd was not particularly helpful when it came to asking for directions. Failing to get information the first time Vincent tried a different approach and confronted a man who did not have enough coin to cross the bridge. “Excuse me sir. Are you familiar with the other side of the river? We aren’t from around here and it seems we might be able to help each other out.”

The man’s name was Johan Stilts’ish (I’m not good at spelling or remembering names…) and he was indeed familiar with Talagaad and seemed a talkative and respectable man. Through some idle conversation and his willingness to share what he knew, the party mutually agreed to hire Johan as a guide. In return we will cover Johan’s tolls as well as a significant bonus after we concluded our day’s business.

The bridge was guarded by men tailored in red and white uniforms representing the colors of Talabheim. They were armored as one would expect a guardsman would be and they were decently armed with spear in hand and an axe at their hip. “Halt.” Cried the guard. “The toll for crossing the bridge will be 10 pence a person.” The party would soon find out that unique variables to ‘person’ that effected the price. In short… Halflings, being short as they are, only paid 5 pence. and “cripples” as the guard address Genaro must pay 15 pence to cross the bridge. This seems to have been the party’s first taste of Talabheim long list of laws.

Once crossed the river all eyes were on a large wall littered with papers and request for possible work. Every so often a crier would be calling out what was written on the papers. Work was scarce in Talagaad as so there was a large crowd surrounding the wall. One boisterous reader cried out that there was to be lucrative work coming tomorrow and that all interested members should meet at the Eel Tavern early tomorrow morning. Johan seemed interested in the job as well as Sally. Perhaps this would be that party’s way into Talabheim?

As Johan explained getting into Talabheim is an expensive and time consuming effort. Waiting lists and customs and yadda-yadda making it likely that the process could take a couple days before one begins there journey up the “Wizards Way”, the path that leads up the crater wall, if they are even allowed to.

The grouped made their way to the market district. Fortunately there was a large selections of shops. We were lucky according to Johan for apparently the market district opens its doors only a few days a week. Whether this is a the law of the land or just a circumstance to the impoverished state of Talagaad was never found out. The group went forth and made their trades. Vincent notably spent nearly all his coin on some maile completing his set as well as smaller items. The prices seemed rather fair for the most part.

The sun was setting and the shadows were getting long. “I must be getting back now,” Johan said after our time at the market. “Perhaps we see each other tomorrow at the Eel Tavern?” Sally gave Johan a generous wage for his time leading the party through Talagaad before making there to the 10 Tailed Cats Inn. The Inn was welcoming and had an interesting feature where if a storyteller was entertaining enough they would earn a free drink. There was a single patron that attempted this but the story of self pity did not seem to go over well enough for a free drink. After an evening the group turned in to get an early start so that they could be at the Eel Inn before the job is presented.

So it looks like we're in good shape for starting the adventure this weekend. The picture above blew me away. I'm really glad Jason is doing these.

Thanks for looking.

***Edit***
Of course I forgot to mention followers. Every time, geez!

Phil Otep reminded me of his blog Philotep's 1/72 Minis Kingdom. He also pointed me to Sprinks' blog Wronghammer, love the name and my original intention was to play Oldhammer in 1/72. I told myself I would never buy another 28mm figure. Whoops. Lastly welcome to Ryder Strickland of Belched from the Depths. Dude is an awesome painter and you should follow his blog!

Ok, now I'm done. For real.

Playing Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (WFRP)

Hi All,

Not a lot going on hobby wise but I did get in a session of 2nd Edition Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (WFRP) yesterday.

After reading Graeme Davis's blog about the 30th anniversary of WFRP I decided to try and see if i could join a game and get my RPG fix. You may remember I had played a few sessions of Call of Cthulhu awhile back on Roll20 and had been hoping to maybe start up another game with one of the OSR D&D clones. But so far I've been too busy, or scattered to do much about it.

Somehow I managed to get into an ongoing campaign and played my first session. It was interesting and not too far outside my experience after dabbling in Call of Cthulhu. What is a little difficult for me is trying to remain in character, my character is pretty opposite my personality. He is very depressive/pessimistic and a "cheap bastard". Not that I don't have tendencies to those things at times, I just don't spend a lot of time there on a daily basis.

It was fun to learn about the system and find some of the fan made charts to flesh out his background, so here it is:

Leopold Boselmann is the third son of Reikhardt and Brita Boselmann although it has been questioned that someone else is the father of him and his younger sister, Dagmar. He was born on Monstille under the constellation Cacklefax the Cockerel in the poor village of Herzholz, between Maselhof and Wissenberg in Wissenland. As such he is morose, even by the standards of Wissenland.

Following the lead of their father, Jodokus and Hildric bullied and tormented Leopold and Dagmar until Reikhardt and Brita divorced. After that Brita and her two youngest children went to live with her Father, Alterer Bruder Holsteiner. He had lost an eye in a mercenary band in the South as a young man and was now the town's grave digger. Leopold's grandfather brought him into the trade, but it wasn't long before Leopold realized he could make more money by selling bodies to traveling merchants who dealt in such things with the colleges of magic. Although he needed the money to support his mother and sister, he came to the conclusion that all magic was evil and the path to corruption.

After the death of his Grandfather, Leopold's “Uncle” Liebink Hornlach took an interest in the family, primarily Brita. He used his position as village Bailiff to turn a blind eye to Leopold's doings, but as time went on he treated Leopold's mother as more of a wanton than a lady. When Dagmar came of age “Uncle” Liebink took a fancy to her and it wasn't too long before Leopold's mother disappeared and Hornlach's protection dried up.

With the open enmity of his Father and Brothers, no Mother or Sister left to care for and the real possibility of ending up at the end of the Hangman's rope, Leopold packed his meager belongings and stole 9 Gold Crowns from Hornlach on his way out of town. He probably is persona non grata in Herzholz.

His prized possessions are his Grandfather's tarnished copper lantern and a gold earring from his mother which he wears in his left ear. He is an adherent of Ranald the Protector and has vowed to make a name for himself and give his children a better start in life than he had. He also makes sure to pray at the temple of Morr and make a small donation before robbing a grave, just to be safe.

Doom: The hourglass shatters before thy last grain falls.

So there you have it. Overall the session went well. I still have a lot to learn about character development in WFRP, but I think I have some ideas on how to progress.

My internet was a tad problematic, I'm not sure if I need a new router or not, but things have been dropping out quite a bit. Roll20 froze on me once and Skype crapped out completely once and was dropping out at the end of the session. With the dropouts, I'm not sure if it was skype or my headset. I have a logitech chorded G35 and the levels changed at one point during the session. What was bugging me was that I could hear myself with a slight delay in the headphones. I find it very hard to talk when I get a delayed play back of my speaking voice in the cans. I tried looking it up after the session and apparently the majority of gamers want to hear their own voice in the headphones. None of the sound settings on my surface seemed to cut the mic to the headphones but also allow it to be heard by skype and others. I finally remembered that in the past I'd run my audio through Voice Meeter for recording. By fiddling with the settings and turning off the mic in the playback channel I can be heard and not hear myself.

Now to figure out how to sneakily get my own agenda underway. While helping the party of course. ;)

Oh and welcome to Rogue Painter Chronicles. I don't see a blog or website in your profile. Let me know and I'll add it.

Happy Gaming.
