Celtic Chariot Spokes

Hmm, in the great chariot dispute of 2011 the question of how spokes in ancient British/Celtic times has surfaced and I found the picture below which might show this. It is from a reputed book so I hope it is accurate. I do like the intricate golden work done on the spoke. The chariot itself looks plain weird - much more like someone stole the local baker's cart and went for a joyride...:

Probably more detailed than I could do on the small Pendraken Chariots I bought from Ebay but it does provide an excuse to use a different colour than brown for the spoke...

More Ebay

Hello all,
been a bit quite during december as I couldnt keep up with work anf family demanding too much time. I did manage to spend some more money on ebay (I have decided that these will be the last purchase in a long time - I have more lead than I could paint in a year).
These are more infantry units (which I always seem to need) with nice detail and variation which for me equals painting fun.

10mm Pendraken Ancient British Chariots x 1 Pack. (310253725213#)

The first batch was10mm Magister Militum Viking Bondi:

10mm Mediaeval H.Inf - I think these are Magister as well?

And two packs of 10mm Pendraken Ancient British Chariots- just because I have never painted any chariots :-). I am still not a fan of Pendraken but at least the horses look fine here.
All that (five packs) for 12 pounds, including shipping to Denmark! How am I supposed to avoid buying from Ebay???

Guess thats it - happy new year and all that,
Best regards,
Kasper

Pendraken - 10mm Gaul Cavalry

Hello all,
another unit ready for its moment of internet fame :-). This time it is a unit of Gaul Cavalry from Pendraken. And one fo the reasons I don't buy Pendraken minis anymore. The unit comes with only one pose, short and weird horses (ponys?) and the Gaul himself is devoid of detail and looks boring. The only positive thing is that the face is actually quite good.
I had to do a lot of different horse colours to get some variance into the unit - some worked and some look a wee bit weird :-).
Anyway - the unit does look like light mounted skirmishers so that is the role they get to die in most often.

Best regards,
Kasper

Warmaster Ancients and Medieval - 10mm Knights and Light Cavalry

Hello all!

This is the (as yet very unfinished) main page for my painted Knights and Light Cavalry - a register of brand, type and what they are normally used as.
Also, of course, they will be accompanied by a photo taken in my "photostudio". All pictures are of course clickable which allows viewing them in larger sizes :-).
Knights
Will be arriving soonish...
Light Cavalry

Other Information: Excellent models with a superb amount of detail - especially the horses are great whereas the faces might be the weakest part of these models. I think the shields worked great and they are a pleasure to field.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brand: Games Workshop
Type: Chaos Maurauder Horsemen
Other Information: Excellent models with a superb amount of detail. Some of the best 10mm available.
Even though this is a fantasy unit it is often used in my armies as any type of light cavalry - especially of the barbaric nature for which their savage appearance is well suited.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brand: Steve Barber Models
Type: Early German Cavalry
Other Information: A really nice unit from the talented Steve Barber - only ten models and no leader-types though. But more detail than you can shake wet paint at and looks really mobile once painted and based.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brand: Kallistra Miniatures
Type: Armoured Cavalry Normans
Other Information: Great minis - as always form Kallistra - with great horses, positions and excellent shields. A pleasure to paint and they look great as "heavy" normal cavalry.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brand: Obelisk Miniatures
Type: Conquistador Caballeros
Other Information: Great minis - looks very knight-like. They have a separate right arm that comes with either a sword or a lance, giving great variety. Suffers from a lack of noticeable detail (pennants or some such thing) and a larger than normal right arm. Works great as "heavy" light cavalry (e.g. Teutonian Light Horses)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brand: Pendraken
Type: Gaul Cavalry AG6
Other Information: Uninteresting minis - single pose, few details and fat short horses.

Kasper

Cannon Comparison - 10mm Games Workshop vs. Kallistra vs. Unknown

Hello all!
"Artillery adds dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl."
- Frederick the Great
great and even appropriate quote for the last couple of pictures which have featured cannons of three different makes :-).
I wanted to show them next to each other so the difference between Games Workshop (11mm), Kallistra (12mm) and the unknown but rather pendrakian style (8mm) compares to each other.
I normally use all different kinds of minis and find that ones on the battlefield with terrain and what not, it is practically impossible to note these differences. But these cannons might be the exception - but considering the huge difference in sizes of cannons in that time it is actually appropriate. One brilliant book that is well worth reading regarding this is "Gunpowder" by Jack Kelly

Pendraken - 10mm Organ Guns

Hello all,
Guns, guns and more guns! Even though I'm in Estonia right now (after Hungary, Finland and Latvia) I would like to present a few pictures of the Pendraken Organ Guns. These are fairly ok minis although as always with pendraken the faces are almost no existent. I have (for fun) added some defensive works in front of the guns to make them more imposing.
Please enjoy and then I will get back to my conferences :-):

Best regards,
Kasper

Pendraken - 10mm Late Roman Unarmoured Standing Spearmen

Hello all - another unit fresh from the photo studio. This time it is an unit of Pendraken's Late Romans (bought on Ebay a while ago so there are some "foreign" models in between) propably the ARL1 Late Roman Unarmoured Standing Spearmen.
Ok models and quite alright to paint as there are quite a few poses and the result was, I think, alright.
These were lucky enough to get some pretty transfers from Little Big Men for their shields. I learnt a lot by trying to apply these and the next time the result will hopefully be better - I do think that these are a bit too dark on the design to be easily viewed from afar..

Anyways hoped you enjoyed them,
Kasper

Warmaster Ancients and Medieval - 10mm Infantry Units

Hello all!
This is the (as yet very unfinished) main page for my painted infantry units - a register of brand, type and what they are normally used as. Also, of course, they will be accompanied by a photo taken in my "photostudio". All pictures are of course clickable which allows viewing them in larger sizes :-).

This is the "family shot" of the army last time it was out in all its glory - many of the units below were (re-)painted after this though:

Medieval Infantry / Heavy Infantry

Brand: Kallistra
Other Information: Brilliant minis and a pleasure to paint. As always with Kallistra they are probably closer to 12mm than 10mm but they have a ton of detail and plenty of poses so are a pleasure to paint. They form the central unit in my crusading army, with their distinct crosses they serve as a pleasant fokus point of the army.

Brand: Games Workshop
Type: Empire Halberdiers
Other Information: They look great on the battlefield but are a boring nightmare to paint. Definately not the best of Games Workshops 10mm range but they do look imposing once fielded.

Brand: Kallistra Miniatures
Type: Continental Pikemen from the War of the Roses
Other Information: Not the best from Kallistra but they do look imposing (especially when their pikes are not bent in all directions...)

Brand: Kallistra Miniatures
Type: Scottish Pikemen from the 100 Years War
Other Information: Very nice pikemen from Kallistra - modelled in three stances - passive, aggressive and one in between giving a very dioramic finished unit. Highly recommended - and their pikes are small enough not to bend every second.

Ancient Infantry / Light Infantry

Brand: Steve Barber Miniatures
Type: German Warband
Other Information: One of my favourite warbands. The minis are brilliant although a bit on the tiny side and a bit brittle at the legs.

Brand: Magister Militum Miniatures
Type: Gothic Infantry and Goth Skirmishers
Other Information: Used as any kind of warband-type infantry. A bit boring minis but I am happy how they turned out in the end. These were bought on Ebay and the leader is from some other product line.

Brand: Pendraken
Type: Late Roman, Unarmoured, standing, spear
Other Information: The shields have transfers from Little Big Men.

Brand: Magister Militum Miniatures
Type: Early Sarmatian Infantry (and viking commanders)
Other Information: Used as any kind of warband-type infantry. A bit boring minis (two poses) but I am satisfied with how they turned out in the end. These were bought on Ebay and the command group are from their viking line.

Medieval Ranged Infantry / Crossbows and Handgunners
Brand: Games Workshop
Type: Empire Handgunners
Other Information: Used as any type of missile units. Great minis with a ton of detail and plenty of poses.

Brand: Magister Militum
Type: LME005 14/15th Century Crossbowmen with Pavisse
Other Information: Quick and easy to paint and look great on the field. Few details and only one pose.

Other Information: Quick and easy to paint and look great on the field. Few details and only one pose.

Ancient Ranged Infantry / Archers

Skirmishers

Brand: Games Workshop
Type: Empire Handgunners
Other Information: Used most often as skirmishing infantry due the commando-like bases. These were my first conversions and attempt at building more diorama like bases in 10mm. The commanders pegleg is a toothpick while the snake is the tail of a 28mm plastic Skaven. Very fantasy like bases but they do add a bit of charater to the skirmishing line.

Brand: Games Workshop
Type: Empire Flagellants
Other Information: Used as either skirmishing infantry or a warband of the more mad type - that will always try to charge if possible.

Brand: Eureka Miniatures
Type: Halfling Militia
Other Information: Used as Skirmishing Infantry due to their tiny size (propably more 6mm than 10mm). This is the more combat orientated Militia unit - the pack from Eureka contains 30 minis both with hand-to-hand weapons and bows. I used these to make two different units, one with msot of the bows and one with a more close fighting focus.
