Smudged Cat Games is based in Cambridgeshire, UK and was formed by David Johnston in 2007 to develop The Adventures of Shuggy beyond a hobby project to a fully fledged XBLA game. David has been creating games in his spare time since he was able to reach a keyboard and gained fame even before graduating from university by creating Timeslip, the first game to feature self co-op, using the Yaroze home development kit for the Playstation One. The game was distributed on the cover disk of the UK Playstation magazine in 1999.

David graduated from Glasgow University in 2000 with a degree in Computing Science and a passion for gaming. After working at Rare for a year he decided to leave the mainstream gaming industry, enabling him to work on his own personal projects whilst working as a non-games software engineer. After various smaller projects he gained notoriety by finishing in the top 20 of the 2007 Dream Build Play competition with The Adventures of Shuggy. After self-publishing A Bomb's Way, The Tower: A Bomb's Climb, Timeslip and Growing Pains on XBox Live Indie Games, The Adventures of Shuggy was published by Valcon Games on XBLA in 2011 to critical acclaim. A PC port of the game in 2012 was quickly followed by the release of Gateways on PC, Smudged Cat Games' second large scale project.
