‘Zootopia 2’ Becomes Disney’s Highest-Grossing Animated Film Ever With $1.46 Billion, Beating ‘Frozen 2’

“Zootopia 2” is going down in the Disney record books.

The animated sequel is now Walt Disney Animation’s highest-grossing movie in history with $1.46 billion at the global box office. It beat the previous record holder, “Frozen 2,” which made $1.45 billion in 2019.

“Zootopia 2” has made $333 million domestically and a whopping $1.13 billion overseas. Over the Christmas holiday weekend, it surged at the box office in its fifth week of release, adding $87.9 million to its already impressive tally.

The film hit the coveted $1 billion milestone after just 17 days of release, and it was the fastest PG-rated movie in history to do so. It’s been a particularly huge success in China, where many Hollywood movies have floundered in recent years. At just the Chinese box office, “Zootopia 2” has already zoomed past $500 million, the highest total for a U.S. movie by far. The only other film coming close is Disney

Isiah Whitlock Jr., ‘The Wire’ and ‘Veep’ Actor, Dies at 71

Isiah Whitlock Jr., the actor who portrayed State Senator Clayton “Clay” Davis on HBO’s The Wire, has died. He was 71.

Whitlock’s manager, Brian Liebman, announced his death Tuesday on Instagram.

“It is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Whitlock Jr. If you knew him – you loved him,” Liebman wrote. “A brilliant actor and even better person. May his memory forever be a blessing. Our hearts are so broken. He will be very, very missed.”

Born in Indiana in 1954, Whitlock began studying theater at Southwest Minnesota State University. Following his 1976 graduation, he attended San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater and earned his first onscreen credit in the 1981 TV movie A Christmas Carol.

Whitlock went on to appear in several projects led by Spike Lee, including 25th Hour, She Hate Me, Red Hook Summer, Chi-Raq, BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods. In

Meyer Gottlieb, co-founder of Samuel Goldwyn Films, died Monday at his Los Angeles home, TheWrap has learned. He was 86.

“Meyer was a gentleman of the old school. I was fortunate to work for him when he ran the Samuel Goldwyn Co., in the heyday of independent film. I learned an enormous amount from him — most importantly, that it is possible to make a life in Hollywood without sacrificing integrity and honesty,” Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, shared in a statement to TheWrap.

Jared Leto’s ‘Tron: Ares’ Sets Streaming Debut

Tron: Ares is spinning toward its streaming debut.

Disney announced Tuesday that director Joachim Rønning’s sci-fi feature is set to begin streaming Jan. 7 on Disney+. The latest installment in the Tron franchise hit theaters Oct. 10 and stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Gillian Anderson and Jeff Bridges.

Tron: Ares centers on an advanced program known as Ares (Leto) getting sent from the digital Grid into the real world, marking mankind’s first interaction with AI.

The film is the latest offering on the streaming service to be available in IMAX Enhanced, featuring the expanded aspect ratio associated with IMAX programming.

Bridges originated his role as software engineer Kevin Flynn in filmmaker Steven Lisberger’s original 1982 movie Tron and reprised it in director Joseph Kosinski’s 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy that also starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. Both previous movies are currently streaming

‘Stranger Things 5’ Hits 34.5 Million Views After Volume 2 Drops, Helping Netflix to Its Best Christmas Viewership Ever

Netflix reports that it achueved its highest Christmas Day viewership of all time this year, with the second volume of “Stranger Things” leading the charge.

While an exact viewership total for Dec. 25 was not provided — and while that total would also include Netflix’s two NFL games and other holiday viewing — “Stranger Things” Season 5 was the most-watched title of the day worldwide thanks to the release of three new episodes. Those episodes also helped Season 5 to a total of 34.5 million views during the week of Dec. 22-28. That’s the season’s second-best weekly total after its debut with 59.6 million views in November,
