Inflammation:
good, bad or ugly?
There is a lot of misunderstanding about what inflammation actually is. Acute inflammation and chronic low grade inflammation are two very different things but often get confused. Many people, including some scientists, seem to think exercise is pro-inflammatory, but only damaging exercise is; otherwise exercise is anti-inflammatory! How should athletes manage inflammation and what role can nutrition play? Who better to ask than one of the leading exercise immunologists in the world: Prof Mike Gleeson.

Professor Michael Gleeson
Professor Michael (Mike) Gleeson graduated in Biochemistry from the University of Birmingham and then completed a PhD on the effects of diet and exercise on energy metabolism at the University of Central Lancashire. He then worked as a research fellow at Salford University and a lecturer in veterinary physiology at the University of Edinburgh, before moving to Aberdeen University in 1985. There he teamed up with Ron Maughan and Paul Greenhaff and worked on research projects investigating the effects of dietary manipulation on metabolism and performance in high-intensity exercise.
In 1987 Michael was appointed senior lecturer in human physiology at Coventry University where he became interested in the effects of exercise on immune function. In 1996 he was appointed as a senior lecturer in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Birmingham and in 1999 he was awarded a personal chair in exercise biochemistry. In Birmingham he teamed up with Prof Jeukendrup to teach sports nutrition and exercise biochemistry and to write the now well known textbook of Sport Nutrition. He also co-authored textbooks in exercise biochemistry and exercise immunology. Mike moved to Loughborough University in October 2002 as the new Professor of Exercise Biochemistry. He is now an Emeritus Professor.
Over the past 30 years, he has published over 200 full peer-reviewed papers on exercise physiology, biochemistry and immunology, and sports nutrition. Mike is widely regarded as one of the leading exercise immunologists and exercise biochemists in the world.
Following his retirement in 2016, he has written a series of healthy lifestyle guidebooks for the general public including “Eat, Move, Sleep, Repeat” and “Beating Type 2 Diabetes”. He is a keen tennis player, a bit of a cinema buff, and an armchair football fan.
