Fixes for the Preview Pane, sidebar, and visual issues on macOS Tahoe

ForkLift 4.4.4 brings a number of important fixes and refinements.

One of the key fixes in this update addresses an issue where the information section of the Preview Pane didn’t always update correctly in some cases while navigating through files. This means that when you browse files with the Preview Pane open, the displayed information now updates reliably as expected.

We have also fixed several macOS-related visual issues, including black areas that could appear in Full Screen Mode and a problem that made it impossible to resize the window when the Preview Pane was visible on the latest macOS versions. Unfortunately, with every macOS Tahoe update, new compatibility and graphical issues have appeared, but we hope that this time everything will work as expected.

The sync process has also been improved, an issue has been fixed where, in some cases, synchronization didn’t start on the first attempt.

In addition, secondary click behavior in the sidebar has been improved: Option-clicking and Control-clicking now work as intended.

You can now also open items from the Show Devices, Quick Open Devices, and Go to Folder pop-ups by double-clicking them, making navigation more convenient for users who prefer using the mouse instead of the keyboard to select items.

New Sidebar Selection Style and macOS Tahoe Fixes

This version introduces the new macOS Tahoe selection style in the sidebar, which changes the text color of the selected item. If a sidebar icon has a color because it is a color tag or a favorite with a custom color, the name of the favorite now inherits that color when the item is selected. Items without a color are selected using the system accent color of macOS, which is blue by default. This feature is available only in the Light, Dark, and Default themes.

In this version, we have removed the AppMover feature because it was never able to work properly.

Most of the fixes in this update address issues related to the transition to macOS Tahoe. Among the most reported problems now resolved are the tab-reordering issue in the user interface, and column view bugs where column widths were not restored after restarting ForkLift, and long file names were truncated even when the “Resize Columns to Fit” option was enabled.

Assign custom icons when saving favorites

ForkLift has already supported custom icons for favorites, but in this release, you can now assign a custom icon directly when saving a new favorite. To add a location to your favorites, select the desired file or folder, then choose Favorites > Add to Favorites from the menu.

A pop-up will appear where you can give your favorite a name and select a Favorite Group. With this update, you can also assign a custom icon right in this dialog. Simply click the icon in the pop-up to choose a custom icon from a small window. You can also select a color at the top of the window. By default, no color is selected, so the icon color will match the theme’s color scheme and/or the selected Accent color in the System Settings. For example, it will appear blue in Light Theme using the default System Settings.

If you want a specific color, select it. To revert to the default icon, click the Use Default Image button. Once everything is set, click Add to save the favorite. You can also change the icon at any time later by editing an existing favorite.

New Amazon S3 regions

We have added five new Amazon S3 regions and reorganized the list of regions to make them easier to find. Regions are now organized into major region groups, with individual regions listed alphabetically within each group:

A variety of small and not so small fixes

Tabs are now restored correctly

One of the most important improvements in this version is that your tabs are properly restored after restarting ForkLift, even when they contained remote connections. This means you can continue exactly where you left off, without having to reopen your remote servers manually.

Reliable 32 px icon previews

We have also addressed a long-standing issue where icon previews disappeared in List View when the 32 px size was selected, especially while scrolling through large directories. With this fix, previews remain visible and consistent, making it easier to identify your files.

Better handling of full-width whitespaces

For users working with Japanese or Chinese filenames, we fixed an issue where full-width whitespace characters were not copied correctly in Terminal style paths. This ensures that the paths can be used in Terminal correctly.

Sidebar Editor improvements

ForkLift now remembers when you show or hide favorite groups in the Sidebar using the Sidebar Editor. Previously, these changes were not preserved after restarting the app.

Other improvements

Alongside these key changes, ForkLift 4.4.1 also brings a series of smaller fixes and refinements, such as layout adjustments, icon alignment, and cleaning up leftover macOS Tahoe-style menu icons.

Smarter Column View

Column View now displays iCloud status icons for files stored in iCloud Drive and on other platforms using Apple’s File Provider. These indicators are now consistent across all three views, so you always know which files are stored locally and which are in the cloud. Clicking the icons won’t download files, you can download them via the context menu or in the Preview Pane.

iCloud Drive Enhancements & New Look for macOS Tahoe

We are excited to announce ForkLift 4.3.5, the first version built on macOS Tahoe 26. This update brings several design improvements to better match Apple’s new Liquid Glass interface, along with major enhancements to iCloud Drive integration and cloud file handling across all supported services.

Refreshed Design on macOS Tahoe 26

ForkLift 4.3.5 adopts Apple’s new design guidelines introduced in macOS Tahoe 26. It is also the first version built on macOS Tahoe 26, which means that if you run it on the new beta, you will notice visual updates that align with the system’s new Liquid Glass design.

However, these changes also affect the appearance of ForkLift on older versions of macOS: the toolbar now stops where the right pane ends, instead of extending across the full width of the window as it did before. Additionally, the boxes around sections in the Preview Pane (Info Window) have been removed to match the cleaner look on Tahoe, which results in a simpler appearance on earlier systems as well.

macOS Tahoe also introduces small, helpful icons in menus as part of its updated visual language. To follow this guideline, ForkLift 4.3.5 adds icons to its menu items. Some of these icons are provided by macOS and only appear on Tahoe, while the ones we have added manually are visible on earlier versions like macOS Sequoia too.

⚠️ Known Issue:

ForkLift 4.3.5 crashes in Column View on macOS Tahoe. We are working on a fix.
If you rely on Column View while using the Tahoe beta, we recommend continuing with ForkLift 4.3.4 for now. This issue does not affect public (non-beta) macOS versions.

If ForkLift 4.3.5 won’t start, it is probably because you quit the app while it was in Column View. When you try to open it again, it immediately crashes due to this issue. You can find a workaround in the comment section below.

Better iCloud Drive Integration

This version also focuses on improving ForkLift’s interaction with iCloud Drive:

• Larger cloud icons in the file view in List View make it easier to spot which items are in the cloud.
• Cloud icons have been added to Icon View as well (coming soon to Column View).
• Selecting a cloud-based file no longer downloads it automatically, a change that better respects cloud storage behavior.
• Even if a file is located in the cloud, you can still see a preview of the file in the Info Window (Preview Pane), helping you identify it without triggering a download.
• If you want to download the file, you can:
  • Right-click and choose “Download now”
  • Click the cloud icon in the Info Window, below the preview
  • Open or Quick Look the file, which will also trigger an automatic download
• You can also remove local downloads and keep items in the cloud by right-clicking a file and selecting “Remove download” just like in Finder.

Better support for Other Cloud Services

This cloud file handling isn’t limited to iCloud Drive. It also works with third-party services that support Apple’s File Provider system, such as:

• Dropbox
• Google Drive
• OneDrive

…and other apps that integrate with Finder using this modern file system.

If you have the desktop apps of these providers installed, they usually integrate with Finder and also appear in ForkLift. However, the Download now and Remove download options were previously missing. These options are now available in ForkLift too, allowing you to:

• Download cloud files without opening them
• Remove local copies and store files only in the cloud, right from ForkLift
• Manage your cloud storage without needing to switch to Finder

Other Improvements

ForkLift 4.3.5 also includes numerous bug fixes and improvements, especially related to:

• The Tools section in Settings
• Logs
• The Undo/Redo queue

ForkLift is now compatible with macOS Tahoe 26

Improved stability and support for macOS Tahoe 26

ForkLift 4.3.4 includes several important fixes and improvements related to macOS Tahoe 26. Unfortunately, version 4.3.3 frequently crashed on the macOS Tahoe 26 Beta, so users have not had much opportunity to test ForkLift on the upcoming macOS. We hope these fixes make ForkLift stable on Tahoe, and allow users to provide more feedback about any remaining issues.

This update also includes a number of GUI improvements, some of which will be visible only on macOS Tahoe. However, the app was built on macOS Sequoia to avoid potential issues caused by the beta environment. This means that some of the visual changes designed for macOS Tahoe may not yet appear in the current release.

Better Navigation, Smarter Pasting, and a Smoother Experience

In addition to these compatibility fixes, version 4.3.4 brings many improvements to the Logs section in the Preview Pane and a range of small but useful GUI fixes. One of the more noticeable changes is the improved navigation using the Back and Forward buttons, you can now move back and forth smoothly without unexpected behavior.

Another functional improvement: when using the Paste command from a folder’s context menu, pasted items are now correctly placed inside the selected folder, rather than beside it as before.

Keyboard Shortcuts in Quick Open and Improved Layout Memory

One of ForkLift’s most powerful yet underrated features is the Quick Open window, a true time-saver that many users still don’t take full advantage of. With Quick Open, you can instantly access favorites and execute menu commands without having to dig through menus.

To use it, simply press the Esc key to open the Quick Open window, then start typing the name of the favorite or command you want to use. For example, typing “Downloads” will show options like Open Favorite > Downloads or Execute Command > Downloads, which corresponds to the Go > Downloads menu command. Use the arrow keys to navigate the list and press Enter to activate the selected item. It is especially helpful if you are unsure where a command is located or don’t know its shortcut.

Starting with version 4.3.3, Quick Open now displays the keyboard shortcuts next to each result, making it easier to learn and remember them as you work. For many commands, you can even press the shortcut directly while the Quick Open window is active, unless the shortcut also works inside a text field, in which case the text field action takes priority. Give Quick Open a try to make your workflow faster and more efficient, you might be surprised how much time it can save you.

Another improvements to your workflow:

ForkLift now remembers and reopens the content of the second pane when switching between One Pane and Two Pane Layouts. This means fewer disruptions and a smoother experience when adapting the interface to your needs. (This behavior was introduced in 4.3.1 but we forgot to mention it back then.)

The Activity Window now displays the number of items being synchronized. Whether you are syncing dozens or thousands of files, you will now have a clearer picture of what is happening in real time.

You can now add a “Date Last Opened” column to the List View, making it easier to identify recently used files at a glance.

Subtle Improvements

We have made some refinements to make your experience even more intuitive. ForkLift now ignores quotation marks in path entries in the “Go to Folder” window, the Esc key can close the “Copy to as” pop-up, and hidden files are easier to recognize in Icon View thanks to a lighter color tone.

Resolving Bugs

This release also includes a variety of fixes, from improving QuickLook behavior and Preview Pane reliability, to resolving some SFTP session issues and localization inconsistencies. We have also refined how ForkLift handles files with identical names but different letter casing during copy operations.
