Update: Detained DW correspondent placed in pre-trial detention    DW correspondent Alican Uludağ appeared before a detention judge on February 20. The prosecutor requested pre-trial detention, and the court subsequently issued an arrest warrant. An appeal filed by DW's legal team was rejected, with the court citing a supposed flight risk.    DW Director General Barbara Massing: "Within just one month, the case of our colleague Alican Uludağ is the second in which a DW correspondent has been placed in pre-trial detention. The proceedings are clearly politically motivated. We are shocked and will continue to campaign for our colleague's release." DW condemns the arrest of its correspondent in Turkey.   DW's long‑time Turkish Service correspondent Alican Uludağ was arrested in Ankara on February 19 and transferred to the Istanbul Provincial Police Headquarters. He is scheduled to appear before a magistrate today.    He is accused of "disseminating misleading information," "insulting the president," and "insulting the Turkish nation, state, and institutions." The allegations relate to an X‑post from approximately 18 months ago in which he criticized government actions linked to the release of suspected ISIS members and accused authorities of corruption.    DW Director General Barbara Massing described the accusations as baseless and called the handling of the arrest a deliberate act of intimidation aimed at suppressing press freedom. She urged authorities to release Uludağ immediately.    DW remains in contact with his relatives, legal representatives, and relevant institutions in Turkey. DW trainees x Berlinale Talents 🎬 This year, 200 filmmakers – the so-called "Berlinale Talents" – from around the world gathered in Berlin under the motto "Creating Conclusions – Cinema, Chaos and the Power of Discomfort." DW's journalism and technical trainees (aka "Volos") filmed ten video portraits of selected Talents from countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, South Africa and Taiwan. During their week at Berlinale Talents, the Volos researched, conducted and edited these interviews themselves. Following the reduction in DW's federal allocation for the year 2026, the Broadcasting Council, the Administrative Board, and the DW management team convened an extraordinary joint session on February 17, 2026, to discuss a comprehensive package of measures to achieve the required savings of 21 million euros.    Under the budget reduction plan, DW's Greek Service will be discontinued, and the journalistic portfolio in other languages will be scaled back. The German-language journalistic offering will be merged with the broadcaster's German-learning courses. The organization will undergo staffing adjustments, accompanied by a considerable reduction in investment resources. In purely numerical terms, around 160 full‑time positions are affected, although the final number may vary. DW reached a new digital milestone in 2025! DW's journalistic content generated more than 18 billion views across social media, websites and apps last year. That is an increase of about 20 percent and marks the first time we passed 2 billion monthly views. Audiences around the world, especially younger people aged 14 to 40, who primarily get their news through digital channels, turned to DW for trustworthy reporting at a time of global uncertainty. 🌐 Where our growth comes from: TikTok and YouTube were our strongest platforms in 2025, with added reach via Facebook, Instagram, X, WhatsApp, Telegram and India's Josh. Short videos, explainers and regional content drove much of this growth. 🎥 Formats that connect with audiences: Environmental programs like Eco India, Eco Bangladesh and Eco Latinoamérica performed strongly, while JaafarTalk and Albasheer Show attracted large audiences with fresh perspectives on social debates. 🔒 Reaching people in restricted information environments: Despite website blocks and social media limits in Russia, China and Iran, DW still reached millions. DW Russian averaged 18 million monthly YouTube views and 16 million website visits, supported by access tools. 🤝 Why people trust us: Audiences relied on DW during major crises, including conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, developments in Syria and Sudan and coverage of political shifts such as the second term of the U.S. president. People valued DW's clear explanations of global events and their local impact, as well as reporting from Germany and Europe. 'Notes from Caracas' out now 🎬 Directed by award‑winning filmmaker Anabel Rodríguez Ríos, the new DW documentary offers a first‑person account of life in Venezuela during a period marked by the recent U.S. military operation in Caracas, including strikes in the city and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro in early January 2026. As Rodríguez Ríos moves through Caracas, she meets human rights activists, relatives of political prisoners and survivors of torture — voices reflecting the deep polarization and exhaustion within Venezuelan society.    The Spanish‑language version launched on February 2 on DW Documental, with English, Arabic, Hindi and Indonesian versions to follow. As of February 3, the film is also available on DW's linear TV channels.   💬 Check the comments for links to DW's Documentary YouTube channels.
