Digging deeper. Asking tougher questions. In June, journalists from leading media organizations across Ghana participated in two intensive five-day workshops in Accra, led by trainers Isaac Kaledzi, MANASSEH AZURE AWUNI and Patrick B.. 💡 Constructive Journalism Working in teams, participants produced newsroom-ready stories on plastic alternatives, waste recycling and sustainable packaging, applying practical solutions journalism tools to address real-world challenges and highlight pathways for change. 🔎 Investigative Journalism From child trafficking to public service accountability, participants developed newsroom-ready investigations while strengthening their skills in source verification, risk assessment, evidence gathering, and story development. The workshops were delivered under the EU-funded African Media Integrity and Resilience Programme (AMIRP), supporting journalists to produce impactful, high-quality reporting that informs, engages and empowers communities.

Summer is when our MFJI students gain hands-on experience through internships. Three of them - who just completed their first year of studies - interned at Deutsche Welle and DW Akademie and learned many new things: From the culture of an international newsroom with high quality standards and honest feedback, to very precise fact-checking to support for media professionals in crisis situations. Emmanuel Dulac HOUSSOU worked with the #HannahArendtInitiative, where he developed skills in project management while learning more about protecting journalists worldwide. Yasmina Ouili joined DW's French for Africa newsroom, gaining hands-on experience in radio and online reporting. Pape Malick Thiam interned with DW's fact-checking team, where he discovered a growing passion for investigative journalism. Looking ahead to 2027: keeping media freedom on the G20 agenda With the United States hosting the G20 in 2026, members of the Media20 initiative are realistic about the challenges ahead. But rather than standing still, media advocates are already focused on 2027, when the United Kingdom takes over the G20 presidency. At this year's DW Global Media Forum, experts Gypsy Guillén Kaiser, Dr Yemisi Akinbobola, Paula Miraglia, Birgit Pickel and Mel Bunce discussed how to advance information integrity, independent journalism and sustainable media ecosystems in an increasingly difficult global environment. The conversation highlighted how important it is to acknowledge that free and independent media are not only democratic necessities but also drivers of economic development, stability and growth. The report calls for: - more flexible, long-term funding - greater local ownership and shared governance - stronger support for sustainable digital transformation Independent media need more than crisis support. 🗣️ Community dialogue in Côte d’Ivoire: "When young people talk to one another, peace makes progress!" 📌 Our local alumni communities in Côte d’Ivoire have recently stepped up community dialogue initiatives in Duékoué, Gagnoa, Dabou and Abengourou. ✨ These dialogue forums aim to strengthen social cohesion and combat disinformation and hate speech within their communities through the responsible engagement of young people and women. 📻 On local radio stations, 🏫 In schools,👥 Within communities of young people, women and community leaders, forums for dialogue can enable everyone, and young people in particular, to express themselves freely on the challenges affecting their local areas and on their role in building a more united, resilient and better-informed society. In Abengourou, for example, the initiative "Sitting Down to Move Forward Together" brought together different generations in an open dialogue aimed at fostering tolerance, solidarity and civic engagement for lasting peace. Journalists are no longer just reporting the news - they are defending information integrity, Linea Dishena and Eyob Abraha argue in a new guest article for #DWFreedom. They highlight how journalists in Ethiopia are navigating the growing challenge of AI-generated misinformation amid political tensions, conflict, limited resources and safety threats.
