How can digital technology help to innovate solutions for sustainable and circular economy? To find out - check out our recent special issue editorial article, published during the summer at R&D Management! Based on the special issue articles, and the development in the field at large, we identify the most promising digital technologies across three levels: ▶️ Ecosystems & value chains: Digital platforms, virtualization, and connectivity technologies ▶️ Organizational: Variety of digital technologies that help organizations with resources and materials efficiency and circulation, including AI, 3D printing, cloud computing, etc ▶️ Products/components: Digital technology integrated in the product design, e.g. digital product passports or digital twins of individual products One interesting notion is that a particular technology can serve multiple levels. For instance, AI can be used to optimize value chain circularity, organizational processes in materials efficiency, as well as many product-level features. During Climate Week, many important conversations are happening. But too often in silos among people who already agree. Some argue the energy sector shouldn’t be part of this conversation. I disagree. If we want progress, we have to talk with incumbents—not just about them. With that in mind, I sat down with Vicki Hollub, CEO of one of the largest oil & gas companies, to talk candidly about the future of energy. Vicki outlined her vision on energy supply, demand, and her strategy to deploy direct air capture technology to reduce emissions. The conversation was interrupted briefly by protesters. And while I support the right to respectfully dissent, that moment ended up underscoring the point of the event: 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵. Christian Richter Østergaard and I would like to share our new book chapter in the Oxford Handbook of Spatial Diversity and Business Economics, edited by Martin Andersson, Sofia Wixe, Charlie Karlsson, with the title: “Workplace Diversity and Innovation Performance: Current State of Affairs and Future Directions.” In the chapter, we take stock of what research actually tells us about how workplace diversity shapes innovation. While diversity is often celebrated as a key driver of new ideas, the evidence shows a more nuanced picture: diversity can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and skills provides organizations with the knowledge base to generate novel solutions. On the other, differences can also create frictions, group divides, and coordination challenges that hinder innovation. Our review shows that research on workplace diversity and innovation relies on a large variety of ways to measure both diversity and innovation performance. Despite this heterogeneity, the literature tends to highlight the positive stories. Many studies find that diversity in education, experience, gender, or nationality is linked to stronger innovation outcomes. But the picture is less one-sided than it may appear. Negative effects are heavily underdiscussed, and a substantial share of studies report non-significant results that rarely receive attention. We even raise the possibility of publication bias: that studies showing no or negative effects might be less likely to see the light of day. In short, while diversity often supports innovation, the evidence is mixed and the silences in the literature are just as important as the findings that dominate it.
