A custom built module, Push Block, was also created with features such as:
- Push Block module pushes the selected blocks only to the live server.
- Grants the opportunity to filter blocks based on domains, and regions. The LCG team wanted this feature in the core blocks module.
- Any new block needs to be approved on staging site first and then transferred using push block, however users need to set display of this block on the live server only, as the node IDs on the live server could be different.
London Capital Group Holdings PLC (LCG) is an established member of the AIM market and a leading provider of online trading services with a white label spread betting product offering that enables low cost route to market without the need for investment in technology and infrastructure.
LCG has 23 white label websites around the world of which some are multi-lingual. These white label websites were managed by the LCG in-house development team. The company was also dependent on a third party company, Ariel, for managing content. If any content required change, then all white label sites needed manual updates.
LCG needed a platform from where they could automate the updating of their unique and shared content across all web sites simultaneously, as well as easily create more white label web sites.
About the project
Goals:
The main goal was to create a single code base for the 23 websites with common and unique content. The content publishing was a complex procedure with different stages of approval and was achieved using Drupal’s workflow module.
Requirements:
1. Streamline the process of creating white-labelled web sites.
2. Cut down the time frame of updating common content across all sites.
3. Allow for the ability of multiple user groups to access different content areas.
4. Dynamically change common content across the white label sites.
5. Manage tailored content for the individual site easily and effectively.
6. Create multi-lingual sites for the white label and internal websites.
7. Create landing pages for PPC, allowing the marketing team to proactively market the internal LCG websites.
8. Create and integrate a more comprehensive booking system for webinars and seminars.
9. Provide an application that is flexible to changing demands of the business.
10. Offer freedom and flexibility for future growth and develop an online product to match their business objectives.
Outcome:
We built a multi-site and multi-lingual Drupal system with LCG, with easy to use content management execution across all white label sites. With the new system, LCG was able to add a new white label site in less than one week's time.
The dependency on Ariel for managing content was completely removed and Ariel is now strictly maintaining the firm's trading platform.
Why Drupal was chosen
Drupal was the effective CMS for the LCG project with its flexible, yet feature rich core content management capabilities powered by the use of custom add-on modules. In order to simplify the process of new white label web site creation and existing website maintenance LCG decided to move to Drupal’s Open Source based content management system. Drupal was also chosen because of its multi-lingual and multi-site capabilities, features that were an absolute must for managing the 23 multi-lingual websites of LCG. Along with the general content of the spread betting websites, LCG also wanted to move the application forms to Drupal which would provide the ability to capture additional data and define the user journey.
In order to draft the final requirements for the CMS for LCG, we worked with project stakeholders to understand the requirements and create a solution. The project also had involvement of the third party, Ariel. We then met with the third party team members to discuss the requirements and issues with the existing system. We were then able to come up with a solution using inbuilt Drupal modules and contributed modules with their own customizations to meet project requirements.
Technical Specifications
Key modules/theme/distribution used:
Domain Access: London Capital Group required the active management of 23 distinct web properties. To ease content administration, Domain Access was used to manage content across each so that site visitors viewing each separate domain or subdomain were fed the correct information based on their permission set.
