According to TMZ, Baldwin and his brother Stephen Baldwin crashed into a tree while driving a Range Rover. Photos from the scene showed both brothers unharmed as they examined the damaged vehicle. In his Instagram video statement, the Oscar-nominated actor explained the circumstances that led to the crash.

"A guy cut me off in a truck, big garbage truck. I mean, a garbage truck the size of a whale," Baldwin said. "It must have been something commercial for like, taking away material from construction or something. It was the biggest garbage truck I've ever seen."

He continued, "To avoid hitting him, I hit a tree. I hit a big, fat tree. I crushed my car, my wife's car. I crushed my wife's car. I feel bad about that." Baldwin clarified that the damaged Range Rover belonged to his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, not to him or his brother.

    Weekend context

The brothers were in the Hamptons for the International Film Festival, which ran from October 3-13. As co-chair of the festival's executive committee, Alec attended the Chairman's Brunch on Sunday evening, October 12, alongside Stephen.

"My brother Stephen was visiting me on Long Island, and we spent the weekend out there for the film festival," Baldwin explained in his statement.

The actor expressed appreciation for the East Hampton Police Department's response, giving special recognition to Officer Gerkin for his assistance at the scene.

Baldwin also mentioned upcoming travel plans to California to reunite with his family. Hilaria has been in California competing on Dancing With The Stars with partner Gleb Savchenko. The couple was eliminated last week despite consistently receiving high scores from judges.

"I'm still so proud of my wife. Hilaria, I love you more than anything, and I'm very proud of you," Baldwin said in the video.

He also congratulated artistic director David Nugent and the festival team for a successful event, resharing the festival's closing post to his Instagram Story, which highlighted the world premiere of Merrily We Roll Along and other programming highlights.
