Updating a user to enterprise owner #187092
-
Select Topic AreaQuestion BodyDoes anyone know a way to upgrade a user to an enterprise owner? We have an orphaned enterprise owner account and I'm trying to upgrade my account so we can update our plan. Orphaned meaning that our previous enterprise owner is no longer associated with our organization but it looks like Github has some odd role where you can be an enterprise owner but not associated with the account. Unfortunately they're the only enterprise owner so I'm stuck in this catch-22. |

"Been there, and it’s super annoying! You almost definitely need to contact GitHub Support to fix this. They can verify your identity and promote you so you can update that plan. They usually understand the urgency, especially when it involves billing! Good luck!" |

Ah thank you for the quick post and insight! Yeah I was wondering if there was a way around it, my support ticket has been open for a few days then with no response. But they've been having a lot of outages so I imagine their support ticket queue is quite large. Shucks, good to know that I need to implement a workaround in the meantime |

@martinwoodward are you able to help out real quick? This seems like a quick fix and would be hugely impactful since our processes are blocked |

You can’t upgrade yourself to Enterprise Owner. In GitHub, only an existing Enterprise Owner can grant that role to someone else. If the previous owner is the only Enterprise Owner and no longer accessible, you’re effectively locked out at the enterprise level. The only solution is to contact GitHub Support and request a reassignment of the Enterprise Owner role. Be prepared to provide proof of company ownership or control (company email domain, billing details, etc.). There’s no way to do this through the UI, API, or CLI without GitHub’s intervention. |

@X3nonxe @P-r-e-m-i-u-m thanks for the quick responses! Yeah I'm trying to get the attention of github enterprise customer support at this point. I've had an open ticket for about a week now and its been blocking our processes. Would be happy with upgrading to an enterprise support plan but since im not enterprise owner, im stuck in this weird catch-22, waiting for github intervention Maybe @DaveBurnisonMS can help? |
