A nice short and sweet game, not a great amount of variety to the gameplay or environments but I enjoyed it!
I think the hitbox on the fires could be a little bit bigger, as it is deceptively finnicky at times especially on the cats.
I like the little angelic sound effect whenever picking up items or rescuing animals, reminds me of cruelty squad for some reason but might just be the general PS1 aesthetic. And on the note of aesthetic this pulled on the PS1 look very well!
I also appreciate the option to crouch under smoke to allow the player to explore without punishment, and gave a nice balance between crawling to move and standing up to extinguish.
Good work!
I beat the game it's short and sweet. It's a pretty creative and unconventional interpretation of the dungeon crawler formula and i enjoyed it. The PS1 graphics looks genuine and consistent, the audio has the genuine PS1 feel as well. I think the it could be a much better game if the gameplay had some more variety to it right now it feels a little basic but i can't be so criticial about it considering that this was achieved in 9 days by a single person.
I think the gameplay can be made more engaging and some tension can be added. Like there was a countdown before the building collapse down from fire or extinguishing fires can stop the smoke. Systems like that can be added to the game. Right now the flames only block passage. Also there's a heat meter but you only get damage when you step on a tile with flame. I feel like you wanted to add a more detailed heat mechanic to the game but you ran out of time before you could do that.
Other than that i noted two things that can be improved about the game. 1 is that you have to aim very precicely to a specific point to extinguish the fires. This frustrated me a little when i try to extunguish the cats, bcs they keep moving, making it even harder. But i like the sizzle sound effect when you aim to the right spot. It's nice feedback. The other thing is game shuts down without a warning when you hit escape. I did it and lost some progress. There should me a menu or a warning message ppl can hit escape by mistake.
I am personally interested in fire fighting and disaster games myself so i kinda have an extra sympathy for this game. I made a fire fighting game myself in a game jam. I think this is a very solid game with a good potential and if it's fleshed out more can become a hit game. Thanks for enriching the jam with your creative entry and thanks for submitting!
I really like the setting and the quite unique game play. I was a bit confused about some parts but I did manage to get to the end after a little break. The game also crashed on me, but I’m running in a VM on linux so maybe not that strange there are hick-ups.
The style was cool, the cats cute.
More feedback and discussion on what confused me in the play-through:
Thanks for playing and recording it! It looks like some sort of bug is happening because you're supposed to be able to aim with the mouse, which lets you extinguish those floor fire, have more flexibility with the cat fires, and rescue the monkeys while standing. I haven't seen that happen yet.
I'm glad you were still able to stick with it despite that happening and I appreciate all the feedback!
I actually had the temperature in Celsius for most of development but switched it to Fahrenheit as I sort of associate it with firemen and dystopia because of the novel Fahrenheit 451, maybe I should add the temp type as an option.
That's a very creative take on the theme, nice work!
i loved the mechanics and the arstyle, great stuf!
Really fun, excellent length for GameJam, liked the pixelated indie graphics. Funny plot. Intro and outro songs for me added the right vibe of a news report and city business. Everything put together well and feels like complete experience with a tutorial, start and... conclusive, tragic ending.
A big fan of cat on wheels - nice way to elegantly "deal" with animations. I heard that this is an endangered species, good thing that we are saving them :)
The only vague thing that i thinking about is that maybe there was not a lot of reason to move on grid? Oxygen is depleting over time, there are no battles, so there is kind a no reason to plan you're turns.
But of course all jam criterias was met. And this was creative submission. It was cool and fun to take part of. Thank you!
Thanks so much!! Thanks for the kind words and for saving the endangered cyborg cats :)
In regards to your comment about the grid, I agree, this was using some ideas I had come up with before, then once I heard about this jam I figured I would try using them in a dungeon crawler context. I think next time I would like to try playing around more with the dungeon crawler-specific "timing" elements.
Great little game, the cats moving around are annoying to extinguish though. But its okay, I'd do anything for the wheeled cats. Respect for the fireman o7

Thanks for playing!
Nice quick game!
Game was kinda straight forward in what was expected. The map shows very little area so hard to use for much. But I guess a fire building should be hard to navigate.
The thing that took me some time to figure out was that the lit kittens on skates I had to aim for the upper flame and not the base. All my instincts tell me to aim for the base so I didn't even reflect on that, and I thought they were not extinguishable.
Thanks for playing! Yeah I watched some other people play and they were having some similar issues with the fires on the cats too. How were the ground fires' hitboxes?
Firefighting and saving the animals is a great take on the theme. Really liked playing the game. And I didn't mind paying "the ultimate price" to save the animals.
Excellent entry :D
Thanks for your service to the monkeys and cats!
A fascinating (and fun) interpretation of the themes.
The mechanic is a breathe of fresh air if you'll pardon the pun. I've ended up playing a string of deck builders and this has been a lovely change of pace. The firefighting mechanic is well implemented and intuitive to use. The game was also a great length in my opinion.
Visually everything was nice and consistent, and I liked the post-processing which worked well here. I think the perspective was a little narrow for me - but as I write this, it does occur to me that your view is narrowed in a respirator, so perhaps it's all intentional!
Anyway, I had fun and thought it was a highly creative way to tackle the jam. Thank you.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Reminds me of the snes game "The Fireman". I sometimes thought about who would be cleaning up after someone like superman haha, now I know!
Thanks for playing! I hadn't heard of The Fireman before but I had suspected it was a Human Entertainment game right as I read that! Their game SOS on the SNES was actually partial inspiration for this project.
Nice little game. I like the theme and the creative ways to move around and manage resources. The graphics could be better in some places and some aspects were a bit counter intuitive for me, but I liked it in the end.
Thanks for playing! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the controls and resource management aspect.
A solid entry. That Fire Starter… I mean Fighter left quite the mess!
Thanks for making this and sharing it with us.

Thanks so much for playing it and recording it! It was super valuable getting to watch someone else play it. That bit about the extinguisher was super enlightening, I was playing around with some different methods of how it would work but didn't think of looking up how to use an actual extinguisher for inspiration! If I move further with this project that's definitely one of the first changes I plan on making.
A really cool game! Love the concept, and the execution was great. Wish that there was a way to lower the sound a bit :). Overall great entry!
Thanks for playing! I definitely am going to add volume sliders to all my games from now on haha
buhuhu…I did not want to pay the ultimative price ;) What a novel idea for the cleanup theme. Maybe the hero could have trashed the place a bit more and leave behind some of his hero gear or something, to make that point. But anyway, cool concept and played well. Short and sweet :)
The hero gear or other remnants a good idea. If I end up coming back to this project I would consider that to add some meat to the bones. Thanks for playing!
I paid the ultimate price.
It was a fun short ride. I love the premise of leaving the humans in the mess they created yet saving the innocent animals. The game looks great, controls well and feels at least a bit unique.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for playing! I was hoping maybe the humans had already escaped, but I'm clearly more concerned about the animals haha.
The animals are so cute. I wish they werent running around on fire! lol
Lol I was feeling bad about that too while I was making it, I feel like since you're saving them it ended up being alright in my mind haha.
I've always been a sucker for firefighting game's so this was a cool one to see. I particularly liked the burning animals that move around because it changed up the formula a bit. Cool idea.
Thanks for playing! I actually haven't played a lot of firefighter games but this was inspired by some similar natural disaster kinda games. Kinda interested in seeing what's out there.
For a short list: For firefighting, Check out "Ignition Factor" (SNES), Firefighter FD18 (PS2), and Real Heroes: Firefighter (Wii and PC). For natural disasters: Disaster Report (Lots of games on many system), Fire Heroes (PS2, has more rescue than firefighting), and I know you mentioned SOS (SNES) which also has a sequel on PSX "Septentrion: Out of the Blue". There are so many neat obscure games that tried unique things :D
Thanks for this list!! I will definitely check these out.
I totally loved Disaster Report 4, think the previous games in the series look even better especially the one on PS2. Same studio made a game which you're trying to survive a Kaiju attack on a city releases on PS4, only in Japan. I'll check the games you mentioned, i'm very interested in disaster and fire fighting games myself. I made a game which you extinguish forest wild fires with a fire plane for OpenGameArt 2023 Summer jam. It's pretty rough but still enjoyed working on it.
