Game description
ItComesInWaves is a game where you are a boat in the mystical dimension of Nom Kabar... a land of lost souls...

Theme interpretation
I used vertex displacement on a shader graph in Unity as the basis for an arena style game in which you sail to the center of the Sin wave to your salvation (and anyone you save along the way).

I really loved the graphics and sounds/music... but I must admit that I didn't understand what to do...

Fishing is not my best skill I would say.

Developer

Thankyou for the feedback!

A V2 is in the work which address' some of the main playability issues :)

Cheers,

Tom

I was immediately drawn in by the graphics:  ethereal, mysterious, elusive, and retro, and the music perfectly matched that atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the lack of feedback made it unclear what to do and when, and after a good fifteen minutes of trying, we weren't able to save a single soul.

The dot on the mini-map was nearly invisible; we only found it with a good dose of imagination.

It’s a pity, because the game feels very promising and intriguing. I truly hope for a more playable version!

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm working on a V2 right now which addresses some of those issues and I plan to add a tutorial stage to the game as well.

Thanks for giving it a go! There are some instructions in the main menu and also on screen but I understand it's not the most player friendly experience.

Cheers,

Tom

That was something. Controls of the boat was already hard, but then second cut scene came... Poor souls went to space after each strike, but somehow i managed to save at least 10 of them. I didnt have seasickness, but now i think i do. Very cool game, challenging and fun gameplay, amazing sounds, but im not a fan of visuals.

Developer

Thankyou! Hope the Seasickness was worth it to save the souls! :D
Thanks for the feedback - sounds by Dakoda Mondragon!

Oh man, this game was able to really capture the brutality of ocean sailing that you see in media very well. Where the enemy is the ocean itself threatening to smash you to pieces. Well done.

Developer

Thankyou! Yes the waves can be a little tricky - will work on it some more after the game off voting period - all the best for the jam :)

really cool take on the theme! very moody and creepy, and the sounds fit the vibe nicely - would say the steering of the boat was quite hard when the waves set in and it made me a little motion sick - I didn't really know where I was either on the map, and it made me a little confused as to whether I needed to go back to the start or if I had gotten lost at sea haha - but otherwise very cool!

Thankyou Sara!

Yes I need to optimise everything I joined the game jam later and squeezed every bit of time into this in the last 2 weeks!

Intend to continue to develop it and make it more user friendly -

All the best for the jam and look forward to trying your game :)

Nice, that sounds great! And good job in that short amount of time

This is the first game I've rated so far that has a full intro video! The concept feels fresh and original. Have you considered publishing this on Steam?

Developer(+1)

Thankyou Vero!

Yes I'm a sucker for a cinematic! :D

I hope to develop it some more - I have every intention to and would like to progress my projects to be Steam-worthy!

All the best for the Jam and I look forward to playing your game :)

Everything was great but my control over the boat was, well lets say inconsistent. Also, fishes are so hard to meet. But overall, a game with great potential :)

Developer

Thankyou for your feedback Parsec- yes it needs some work but glad you enjoyed it!

All the best for the jam and look forward to playing your game :)

This game has a really great, moody vibe to it. I really liked driving the lil boat around, and the visual of the wheel and the sound “clicking” into place as you turned helped make sure I was going where I wanted.

I do wish the camera didn’t fight the player so much, especially once the waves really kick up. I often couldn’t see what my boat’s orientation was because it was hiding behind rocks.

Overall great job!

Developer

Hey ChefPancake,

Thankyou for your feedback!

Really glad you enjoyed the game.

I'm consistently getting this feedback about issues of visibility due to the obstacles and camera position. I have received some good suggestions on how to improve on this and have some ideas of my own. I will work on this and upload an updated version as soon as I'm allowed to!

I wanted the difficulty to be ramped up in the finale but it definetely needs some work to be a better experience for the player.

Thankyou!

Cheers,

Tom

Genuinely loved this game! Played till the very end to see what would happen. I loved how the boat controlled and responded so quickly to the mouse movements. It forced me to steer back and forth trying to get my boat to go in a straight line while the waves smashed me against the rocks. Cutscene at the start: Great world building. Cutscene in the middle: fantastic to highlight the change of pace that was about to happen. Loved the black and white aesthetic. My favorite part of the game was the waves that physically affected the height of the boat and seemed move the boat about in other directions too.

In general, I loved the game. However, I had a couple of issues. At the bottom of the first loop, the isometric view just made it so that I could not tell where the boat was in relation to the rocks. Whenever I went behind one of the rocks, I ended up spinning in circles, loosing a couple of souls each time. This was the same at the end with the white pillar of light. This could have a possible remedy if you stuck an arrow in one of the corners of the screen which showed the direction the boat was facing. That, or make a shader for the boat which allows the player to see an outline of the boat through the rocks. There also seemed to be a bit of a problem with how the mouse functioned because at some points, it felt like it was getting caught on something and the steering didn't turn as I was moving my mouse. This may have to do with how you captured the mouse input. Honestly, it felt like you made the mouse invisible and let it hit the corners of the screen to provide the natural minimum and maximum rotation for the steering wheel (I don't know boat terms lol).

All in all, loved the game. I think I might save this one and come back to play it again later!

Developer

Hey Daragard

Really glad you enjoyed the game! Thankyou so much for the thoughtful feedback.

There's some great solutions in your feedback and I agree this is an issue that needs to be worked on... The suggestion of arrows - perhaps via a compass like UI? Could be a helpful indicator... Also the shader graph idea - maybe a subtle indicator could work well...

Thinking of this I'm also thinking the maze / general level design needs to be worked on... some gaps in the rocks on those problem areas would mean as the waves go up and down you would be able to see the orientation of your boat.

Additionally yes - I think I know what you are talking about with the mouse input. I'm not certain of the issue at present but I have noticed that 'clicking' on the screen can help to reset the calculations of the 'virtual cursor'. Also coming out of full screen mode can cause the calcuations to go awry.  I intended for the cursor to be 'locked' in the center of the visual space and for it's position to be 'virtual' so that these kind of issues wouldn't happen but I will take a closer look at the script and see if I can ensure for a more consistent sailing experience!

Hope you came back for further sailing and saved more souls!

Cheers,

Tom

This game was a very surreal and fun experience. The midway point level up in difficulty was cool.
I will say, there were many points where you cannot see your boat towards the end, and steering was not so easy to control. Those gripes aside, I thought it was a visually pleasant cool game with a very mysterious aura. Who was pawn gong guy? What is the spiral? Not sure. Didn't manage to save anyone because I was crashing nonstop for the last 5 minutes. But it was very cool regardless

Developer

Thankyou Valengo :) Glad you enjoyed it!

I pulled some all nighters to see this to it's current state of completion but intend to improve and expand upon it.

I am getting some reoccuring feedback about the visibility issues - which I totally understand. I''ve received some good feedback with some proposed solutions... I am also thinking of rearranging the maze so there are more gaps in the rocks. So you aren't sailing blind so often...

Keep eyes peeled for more mysters from Nom Kabar 😁
