Summarise your game!
Chunks is a 2D platformer where the player and enemies are made of chunks. Players shoot chunks at enemies to deal damage and vice versa. When damaged a health chunk is lost that anyone can pick up to heal and shoot again.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
Corporate devs at our 9-5. First Game Jam!! Most fun we have had programming in years.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?

We apologise for the late review:

simple yet effective gameplay I liked the simplicity you were able to portray using blocks and simple jumping and shooting, which all had a nice feeling. The physics were well executed, and the sounds had me in the zone.

loved the blue hue of the background too.

I was able to jump on an enemy's head and stomp them into the ground, rendering them ineffective for the most part, which I wasn't sure if it was a bug or a feature; nonetheless, it was very entertaining to do so.

However, this made me unable to progress to the next level via the doorway, which I also noted had some very cool effects that changed whether the level was cleared or not. Overall, it was a fun game to play.

Developer

Thanks for playing our game Matt! That was most likely a bug, though we did have an iteration where stomping was part of the game we ended up with a LOT of bugs like the one you experienced. As novice game developers, we couldn't quite figure out why the physics bodies would magic themselves through collision layers, shapes, etc. It sounds like this is a common problem and somewhat fixed by the physics process speed. We've definitely learned a lot from that experience.

Thank you for all the feedback about each aspect of the game! I'm very glad you enjoyed our game. We look forward to participating in the future!

I should clarify I wasn't personally the one to judge your game, I'm forwarding the review from the real judge to protect their identity. I'll pass on your kind words to them :)

The combination of color palette and audio compliments each other, I like the fight against the boss most, It requires a bit of strategizing instead of spam attacking(I actually entered with zero blocks, found that the extra blocks lying around weren't enough for spamming, so I have to pause and decided to drain the boss's blocks, throw them to the confined spaces left and right whenever I'm full of blocks, and land the finishing blow after).

If I have to add about what I personally think would make the game more enjoyable, its that the travel distance between enemies where you just have to move left and right for a while can be reduced but areas where active user actions like the wall jumping(really like that) can be increased!

Overall, nice job!

Developer

Thats so awesome! Thanks for playing our game! We originally designed the boss to fight it exactly that way, but we got a little discouraged when we realized it wasn't all that necessary. Its heartwarming to hear that you ended up taking that strategy! I love hearing this about the levels, I too felt that but didn't pay too much attention to it at the time.  Thanks so much!

That was a really fun game with a very interesting concept.

Thanks so much for playing our game

I think the concept is really nice and I see some potential to it. Like what if this game was a multiplayer/fighting game, and there could be situations like where the other person dodge the last shots and both players run out of ammo so they both race to get the shot back.

Although the level design could use some work, I enjoyed playing this! great work!

Developer

Thank you for playing our game! Ooh yeah that sounds so interesting as a fighter. We'd have to implement some kind of chunk leg sweep! 😄

Nice work! Really liked the system that your ammo-chunks also protect you. So you also lose "shields" when attacking.

Developer

Thank you for playing the game! That concept was intriguing to us as the theme interpretation and it created an interesting balance in the game.

this is really fun! a couple of things, I wish there was more air control, I wish the art was a bit more polished, and either you don't float above the ground, or there is a thematic reason as to why you do float, but apart from that, this is a great game!

Developer

Thanks for the great feedback! Art is definately not our strong suit, working to get better.
