Empowering Deaf Communities in Europe Through Citizen Science -
Empowering Deaf Communities in Europe Through Citizen Science -
This is a guest blog post from the leaders of the Acting4DHH II project. The Acting4DHH logo. Credit: Web2Learn Underrepresented groups, like the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, face social biases, prejudices, and misconceptions within our societies. Awareness of our own biases prompted us to co-design a citizen social science project — Acting4DHH — to […]

AirCasting - SciStarter
AirCasting - SciStarter
AirBeam is a low-cost, palm-sized air quality instrument that measures hyperlocal concentrations of harmful microscopic particles in the air, known as particulate matter, as well as humidity and temperature. The AirBeam measures particulate matter with proven accuracy and when used in conjunction with the AirCasting platform - or a custom solution - helps community-based organizations, educators, academics, regulators, city managers, and citizen scientists map air pollution and organize for clean air. In mobile mode, the AirBeam can be worn to capture personal exposures. In fixed mode, it can be installed indoors or outdoors - it’s weather resistant and doesn’t need …

CoCoRaHS: Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network - SciStarter
CoCoRaHS, The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages who measure and report precipitation. By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive website, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications. Each time a rain, hail, or snow storm occurs, volunteers take measurements of precipitation from their registered locations (reports of 'zero' precipitation are encouraged too!). The reports are submitted to the website and are immediately available for viewing. It's educational, but moreover, fun! Just wait …
Globe at Night - SciStarter
Globe at Night - SciStarter
Seven out of 10 people in the US have never seen our Milky Way Galaxy arch across their night sky from where they live. Have you? If so, you're lucky! If not, it's probably because of light pollution (too much outdoor lighting). Light pollution not only affects our view of the stars, but it also wastes energy and money (about $2 to $10 billion a year!), causes sleep disorders in people, and disrupts the sleeping, breeding and migration habits of animals. You can join other citizen scientists by measuring your night sky brightness and submitting your observations. Just go outside …

Outbreaks Near Me - SciStarter
COVID Near You and Flu Near You are now Outbreaks Near Me! Influenza and COVID-19 pose major risks to our health and wellbeing. We've created a system that allows citizen scientists, like you, across North America to securely and anonymously self-report symptoms. And since our users generally report before they see a healthcare provider, we can see trends and the spread before local and national public health agencies. Contribute your health status: If you’re living in North America, log on and let us know how you’re feeling one or more times per week. See the impact on your community: Check …
Lunar Melt - SciStarter
Lunar Melt - SciStarter
Lunar Melt lets volunteers examine images from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to map impact craters and boulders. These marks help scientists understand the rock fragments in melted flows, their directions, timing, and the Moon’s interior structure. Participants complete an online tutorial, then use mapping tools to analyze lunar surfaces. No prior knowledge is needed.
