Skid

This digipak set from 1970 saw
the Brush Shields-led power-trio
showcase the guitar and vocal
talents of the teen Gary Moore.
Moore pointedly surfaces on
opener Mad Dog Woman, one of
the bluesier of the nine numbers
here, albeit hijacked by some
bongo madness at the end. The
same goes for the meandering
psych-tinged Virgo’s Daughter,
with its Amerindian chanting and
drums, but much of the remainder
is a mix of jazz fusion with scatting
and worse. The guitar work is
frenzied in places and the
percussion syncopated, but it’s all
pretty dated, and the weird
11-minute closer of Felicity is a
misnomer!

Man With A Video Camera

Petri Hagner’s film about a
film, Man With A Video
Camera, opens the lens on
debutant director Esko
Lönnberg’s attempts to “trace
down the hard-to-capture,
psychedelic and vivid creative
power of Circle”.

Leaving behind the
conventions of a nine-to-five
existence in Sweden, Lönnberg
returns to his home…

Doro

Celebrating 30 years since she exploded onto the scene with Warlock, Dorothee Pesch doesn’t look a day older, the stunning, petite singer still going strong. Despite not having a catalogue of classics, her fans rightly regard Doro as the queen of metal, and she opened with a Warlock barrage in I Rule The Ruins, Earthshaker Rock and the stormi…

That’s How Rhythm Was Born

It’s time to rewrite some of
what’s counted as common
knowledge: Alan Freed’s phrase-coining
is trumped by a couple of
decades by the lead-off track
here, 1934’s Rock & Roll; and
Jackie DeShannon wasn’t the
first to use the word “nonchalant”
in a pop context, as the girls beat her to the punch…

Like A Ship… (Without A Sail)

Sometimes it takes just one
track to elevate a genre out of
relative confinement on to the
world stage; as in 1969 when
Edwin Hawkins’ Oh Happy Day
sold millions after being
plucked from a local pressing,
revealing gospel as a gloriously
vital force in contemporary
music. It’s taken nearly 40
years for Chicago preacher…
