YOUNG AT HEART

Many thanks for the article on David
Bowie’s Young Americans album (RC
332) – a truly wonderful recording
which, like so many of Bowie’s records,
sounds as fresh and exciting today as it
did when it was first released.

Readers who enjoyed the RC article
may be interested to read my own
research on the subject on
(www.theyoungamerican.co.uk). The
site aims to document Bowie’s time in
America, including the live shows and
television appearances. It also presents
background information to the recording
of the album, gathered from numerous
press articles from the time, as well
as personal contributions from Tony
Visconti, Harry Maslin and David
Bowie himself.

Readers may also like to know that
the forthcoming EMI Collectors
Edition of Young Americans restores the
bonus tracks found on the earlier EMI/
Ryko re-issues, although the track It’s
Gonna Be Me will be a previously
unheard version, featuring a string
arrangement by Tony Visconti.

GREATEST ALBUM …FACT?

No one is a bigger fan than I of His Bobliness, but
could someone ask Mr Egan why it is a ‘fact’ that
Highway 61 Revisited is the greatest album ever
made, as he states two or three times in his
article on it (RC 381). Surely – and thank
goodness it is – ’the greatest album ever made’ is
actually just a p…

HENDRIX RULES

Re Dave Henderson’s attack (Letters (RC331) on my Jimi Hendrix feature. I don’t know where he got the idea I was comparing Hendrix to Clapton from. I was just trying to convey the impact of Jimi’s arrival 40 years ago, speaking as an observer and fan at the time rather than simply regurgitating the myth. The piece was based on my …

SELLING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD

Regarding Sid Jones’ latest letter, I’m Still Standing’
(RC 368), I agree with him that there is no
substitute for face-to-face contact with customers
and, in a perfect world, all of us would like to own
record shops. But I feel Sid is not living in the real
world. Not all of us can afford to run a shop or
indeed acquire t…

Letter of the month

Seeing Queen on the cover of Record Collector had me dashing home to read what was a great feature. RC still ticks all the boxes for me, and the fact that the magazine has moved with the times while still keeping its quality content means it should remain on the shelves for years to come, while at the same time embracing modern technology and allow…
