The Midnight Ramble Sessions Vol 3

Passing away in 2012, Levon Helm spent the last decade or so of his life as a Saturday-night party host, inviting friends and musicians to jam in the converted barn at his Woodstock home. This third compilation of high times and happy tunes (fourth if you include Ramble At The Ryman, where all and sundry decamped to the famed Nashville auditorium) is the first to be released since his passing.

With a crack unit including such luminaries as Larry Campbell, Jimmy Vivino and Jay Collins behind him, Helm is an ebullient master of ceremonies, bringing a soulful holler to Willie Dixon’s The Same Thing and Al Green’s Take Me To The River. Daughter Amy, meanwhile, plays the saloon chanteuse to perfection on one of Carl Perkins’ earlier, more countrified cuts, Turn Around.

The big hitters arrive in the shape of Allen Toussaint and Elvis Costello, squaring up on the New Orleans bounce of the former’s A Certain Girl, while The Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson roars like a lion on Elmore James’ Shake Your Money Maker. Presumably, there’s still plenty of stuff in the vaults – further volumes will be most welcome.

Reflections – Mojave Desert

Sam Shepherd’s first album Elaenia (2015) was an RC hit. It was an analogue synthfest that managed to be relevant, while also redolent of vintage Tangerine Dream, and flecked with many other influences. Elaenia certainly had a progressive thread, but (while some of the kosmische feel returns here, notably on the bloopy Kites), pure prog is now to…

The Voice Of Trees

Since the 70s, Canadian

form of “continuous music”,
developing for piano a
singular language of
cascading notes, hammered
out and pouring forth in a
stream of unbroken rippling
tone. His expansive creations

Greasepaint Smile

One of those who slipped through the floorboards, Elyse Weinberg looked to be in the right place when her debut, Elyse, landed in 1969. Cher covered her Band Of Thieves, and Weinberg hung out with Neil Young, JD Souther and Nils Lofgren, who all appear on this second (and previously unreleased) album, produced by David Briggs.

Galactic Zoo Dossier (Number 9)

Plastic Crimewave’s frankly magnificent hand-drawn psychedelic bookazine, Galactic Zoo Dossier, first hit the racks in 1995 and is now – cheeringly – on its ninth edition. You won’t need us to remind you that we live in bleakly cynical times, so the unabashed fanboy enthusiasm and homemade community spirit engendered by Plas…
