This CD contains the prescient
\nBasil Kirchin’s very final work. At
\n77 years of age, half blind and at
\ndeath’s door, he was still furiously
\ninventive and invigorated by the
\ngreat fascination in his rare old
\nscores and suites that recent
\nreissues had aroused. This last
\nalbum is largely composed of
\nsonic abstracts, including the
\nremarkable Concept Suite, a fiveminute
\nconversation between
\nseveral people transplanted into
\nmusic, with horns mimicking the
\nsounds of human voices. Bizarre,
\nyet oddly engaging.<\/p>\n
The only two tracks with any
\ntangible jazz structure open and
\nclose the album and the final,
\nuplifting piece, E + Me (named
\nfor Basil’s wife and himself) is
\npoignant indeed: Basil died the
\nweek after recording was
\ncomplete, followed by Esther just
\nafter the CDs were pressed.
\nThough perhaps not the most
\naccessible starting point for an
\nappreciation of Kirchin’s gifts (the
\ndazzling Abstractions Of The
\nIndustrial North, also on Trunk, is
\nthe one to grab you) it is an
\narresting and meaningful
\nswansong from one of our most
