Stackridge played the first note at
\nthe first ever Glastonbury Festival
\nin 1970. Thirty-seven years later,
\nsome might say there are more
\nideas and risks taken on this
\nsingle album than will be exhibited
\nat the entire festival this year. But
\ndon’t let that put you off…<\/p>\n
While the band remain
\ncustomarily consigned to that vast
\nswirly bran-tub of styles and
\ninfluences marked ‘prog’, there
\nwas much more to this jesterly
\nWest Country bunch than an
\nanarchic stretching of the
\nboundaries of folk into Old Grey
\nWhistle Test territory. This is lateperiod
\nStackridge, an impossible
\nhybrid of jazz-rock and folk,
\nthough the CD retains much of
\nthe festival-friendly frolics that
\ncame as part of the original
\npackage. As surprising as it may
\nsound, here are comedy
\ncharacter vignettes worthy (and
\nreminiscent) of Ian Dury, and a
\nbouncy playfulness that blends
\nmusic-hall tinkling, cod reggae
\nbrass and easy interludes to bring
\nto mind The Blockheads, Zappa
\nand even Madness.<\/p>\n
Still, a couple of years after
\nits genuinely optimistic release on
\nElton John’s Rocket label in
\n1974, the band was no more.
\nOh, and did we mention the
\nfiddles and Mellotrons on
