In the last 30 years, no city has produced such a rich lineage of revered rock music as Manchester. Liverpool hasn’t, Birmingham hasn’t, not even London can be credited with the consistency of the music capital of the North. Manchester’s post-punk family tree starts with bands such as Buzzcocks, Joy Division and The Fall in the late 70s. During the beginning of the 1980s, there was the growth of the first truly successful indie bands in the form of New Order and The Smiths. The latter end of that decade brought us the Madchester scene with the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets and James.<\/p>\n
In the 1990s and beyond, the last great band that Manchester has produced is Oasis, and it will be no surprise to anyone that they have achieved the greatest commercial success. Now that they have released their long-awaited compilation album, Stop<\/em> The Clocks<\/em>, and collected their Lifetime Achievement Award at February’s Brits, it is perhaps time that RC<\/em> provided their own tribute to the band.<\/p>\n We have produced a Top 50 list of UK Oasis rarities, compiled from Record Collector’s <\/em>own Rare Record Price Guide 2008<\/em>, plus a handful of new rarities that have appeared or become known since the guide was issued.<\/p>\n The band have now released six studio albums, some heralded as masterpieces, others received less favourably, but have managed to maintain their huge fanbase. They continue to sell out stadiums and still top the charts with each successive release.<\/p>\n Oasis rarities, too, remain as collectable as they have always been, and the items on these pages could easily cost you a cool £6,000 or more. The most sought-after prizes have been the band’s promo items, primarily down to the fact that they are issued in limited quantities. But there are several other reasons as to why the issue of an Oasis promo is as momentous an occasion for collectors as a new single or album.<\/p>\n The first lies in the fact that, throughout their career, special promo releases have been for B-side tracks only (eg Acquiesce and Cum On Feel The Noize) or album only tracks (eg Turn Up The Sun), in order to ensure that radio stations and other media organisations don’t just focus on the A-side songs.<\/p>\n Secondly, many are issued in different unique sleeves, some of those being even better that the standard release sleeves, such as the 12” promo for My Generation. In the last five years or so, the band’s continued commitment to 12” promo releases has resulted in real treats for vinyl junkies. The 12”s are issued on 180gm vinyl in deluxe heavy cardboard sleeves, sometimes with a printed inner sleeve.<\/p>\n They’re an example of what so often gets ignored by writers on the band: their sleeves and artwork are fantastic, many of the designs inspired by Noel himself, with the assistance of the now sadly defunct design company Microdot (during their Creation days) and latterly by Simon Halfon.<\/p>\n Attention to detail is what counts, and Noel Gallagher was a record collector himself.
