{"id":175217,"date":"2007-09-20T09:35:13","date_gmt":"2007-09-20T08:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/siteproxy.ruqli.workers.dev:443\/http\/recordcollectormag.com\/letter\/psych-not-psych"},"modified":"2007-09-20T09:35:13","modified_gmt":"2007-09-20T08:35:13","slug":"psych-not-psych","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/siteproxy.ruqli.workers.dev:443\/https\/recordcollectormag.com\/letter\/psych-not-psych","title":{"rendered":"PSYCH NOT PSYCH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have been an avid reader of <em>RC<\/em> since<br \/>\nthe late 1980s, and I must say that in<br \/>\nrecent years, your wide-ranging series<br \/>\nof articles covering the fascinating<br \/>\nworld of 1960s psychedelia in all its<br \/>\nglory have been very illuminating,<br \/>\nproviding great insight into what<br \/>\npsychedelic music actually means and<br \/>\nentails.<\/p>\n<p>\nWhat has puzzled me in recent<br \/>\nyears, in particular with the advent of<br \/>\neBay and selling online in general, is<br \/>\nthe way dealers now insist on lumping<br \/>\nvirtually any record made post-1966<br \/>\nand pre-1977 under the all too<br \/>\nconvenient catch-all banner of &lsquo;psych&rsquo;.<br \/>\nIt seems that any music style from that<br \/>\nperiod, whether it&rsquo;s prog rock, hard<br \/>\nrock, heavy metal, folk, even blues, is<br \/>\nfair game to be labelled &lsquo;psych&rsquo;,<br \/>\nwithout any consideration or<br \/>\nunderstanding of the genre. Why?<br \/>\nTaken out of context, the term &lsquo;psych&rsquo;<br \/>\nbasically becomes meaningless and<br \/>\nunnecessarily diffuse.<\/p>\n<p>\nAlso, the cardinal sin when it comes<br \/>\nto dealers labelling music in this<br \/>\nmanner is using the term &lsquo;psyche&rsquo;<br \/>\ninstead of &lsquo;psych&rsquo;. Now really, psych is<br \/>\nthe abbreviation of psychedelia or<br \/>\npsychedelic, whereas psyche refers to<br \/>\nthe human mind or soul.
