Classically trained pianist and composer Christophe Chassol has once before attempted to harmonise the ambient noise of cities with Nola Chérie<\/i>, his sonic eulogy to New Orleans. This follow-up develops the concept yet further with a love letter to the sounds and atmospheres of North India. <\/p>\n
Travelling to Calcutta and Varanasi, Chassol filmed the sitarists, percussionists, singers, dancers and children of those cities. This footage, along with field recordings detailing the general hubbub of a busy Indian metropolis, provides the cues for the music. Among the Calcutta passages, Dosidomifa finds Western keyboards and drums following sitar and tabla leads, while XIXth Century manages to find beauty in the screeching of rickshaw horns. <\/p>\n
Later he celebrates Varanasi’s holy river, the Ganges, through the audible ripple of its waves; the beautiful Ganga offers a eulogy to the river’s spiritual power, with Chassol’s keyboard playfully following the rhythms and cadences of Indian speech.
