As founder members of Faust and Can, keyboardist Hans Joachim Irmler and master drummer Jaki Liebezeit can be considered krautrock royalty, but have remained true to the music’s original spirit of exploration, which first shook things up over 40 years ago. The pair hit it off last July when rehearsing for joint gigs, deciding to record an album for release on Irmler’s label in his series exploring the creative possibilities between prepared organ and drums, which has also seen collaborations with Gudrun Gut, FM Einheit and Christian Wolfarth. <\/p>\n
Recorded over three days at Faust’s studio, Liebezeit’s ongoing refinement of African-influenced space-funk pulses meets a formidable foil in Irmler’s ferociously elemental organ ravaging, but, while the unearthly maelstrom raging on tracks such as Washing Over Me can sound as old as the Earth’s core, the pair are not averse to using modern flavours, such as juddering sequenced pulses on Sempiternity or Liebezeit’s casual hip-hop beats on Ein Perfektes Pair. <\/p>\n
