Even on the original release of this album, in 1976, Al Stewart seemed a man out of time. Forged in the 60s singer-songwriter crucible, he’d seemed destined to strum his bedsit ballads with an acoustic guitar for company until the Ever-Readys ran out – yet, against the odds, re-invented himself as a US FM radio-friendly soft-rocker. And this, his seventh long-player, produced by Alan Parsons, was the album that did it. Originally issued on RCA in the UK, it now reappears via Parlophone – and on limited edition vinyl. <\/p>\n
The edited single version of the title track (based on music by keyboardist Peter Wood) made the Stateside Top 10. Had it been titled Foot Of The Stage, the original lyric concerning (the unknown in the US) comic Tony Hancock, it would probably have stiffed! The backing band is a combination of Cockney Rebel and Quiver, and the mood is sunny and optimistic – very radio-friendly. <\/p>\n
Al’s reverted to type now as a singer-acoustic guitarist, and is still out there in the US. He’s also a wine buff, having expounded at length on the subject. So raise a glass to his smoothest vintage… <\/p>\n
