But her sixth solo set steers her back to what she\u2019s best at: exquisite, tenderly fraught torch-soul songs of compulsion and regret, where the lights are dimmed, the feelings run deep and the hushed elasticity of her voice commands close attention.<\/p>\n
The title track is exemplary; its anatomy of compulsion framed in a capital-R Romantic account of Wasser\u2019s urge to convey \u201cthe sound of hunger in my heart\u201d. That mission is fulfilled by the song\u2019s blossoming melody, of which there\u2019s plenty here. Lush fruit both, Warning Bell and Tell Me seem to start mid-song, their discreet urgency evident despite Wasser\u2019s unruffled front.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere, a querulous anxiety haunts the warm electric piano and cool poise of Wonderful. Valid Jagger pleads over deep beats, while Talk About It Later asserts love\u2019s complexities in Wasser-world: \u201cYou say we\u2019re gonna be all right\/I may beg to differ.\u201d<\/p>\n
