Bingley-based guitarist Dean McPhee (previously with Blast First Petite) is now onto his third full-length solo album, following 2015\u2019s excellent Fatima\u2019s Hand. <\/i><\/p>\n
On the Kickstarter-funded Four Stones<\/i>, he is continuing to resonantly fingerpick Telecaster routes through a dubby background of echo, reverb, drones and loops. The effect is as if leaving the listener stranded on dank, deserted moorland in a century long past. There, only the tiny breaths of tremolo can possibly bring warmth to bones shivering under wet tunics.<\/p>\n
The first three tracks here originally came out on Folklore Tapes compilations, and have been remastered for this limited 180g vinyl run. At volume, they fill the room ominously, every fleck of detail needling at one\u2019s emotions. McPhee nears the quarter-hour mark on the title track, with his kick drum effects pedal assisting, in its initial stages, to build up an atmosphere curiously reminiscent of 90s dubbed-out post-rockers Seefeel.<\/p>\n
Four Stones <\/i>is not quite as immediate as his previous collection, but McPhee\u2019s work is remarkably underrated and all well worth hearing. The Americans are better-known for this sort of thing, but McPhee and similarly dislocated soulmates such as Bad Suburban Nightmare are putting up some interesting British alternatives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
