It works like this. Irreplaceable photos and tapes which may have caused you fleeting embarrassment are relegated to landfill, yet somehow bank statements and leccy bills from 1974 survive several house moves and still languish in your drawers. Take that any way you like. Similarly, your Wimple Winch single, that mono copy of The Piper<\/i>\u2026 and those Sorrows and Kaleidoscope LPs are all blithely packed off to eBay to make you wince in later life, yet Tarzan Boy by Baltimora clings inescapably to your being like a family curse.<\/p>\n
Respect, then, to those scrupulous archivists who not only keep (or keep tabs on) simply everything<\/i>, but who are also sufficiently at peace with their dead selves from years past as to benignly sanction having their young entrails picked over by successive generations. By way of example, the King Crimson archive is a thing of genuine wonder: it feels as though there isn\u2019t a single picosecond of their career that hasn\u2019t been somehow preserved, and the meticulous largesse with which this archival cache is curated and packaged sets an intimidating benchmark.<\/p>\n
Just look at Sailors\u2019 Tales<\/i>, would you. Covering an often undervalued interlude in the King Crimson chronicles \u2013 the 1970-72 period, between the sudden, premature dissolution of the epochal original incarnation and the formation of the terrifying Larks\u2019 Tongues\u2026 <\/i>line-up \u2013 this breeze block of a box set brings you new 5.1 Surround Sound and stereo mixes of In The Wake Of Poseidon<\/i>, Lizard <\/i>and Islands<\/i>, an expanded version of the contentiously rough live album Earthbound <\/i>and, Jesus, entire metric tonnes of other 1971-72 live shows, auditions and rehearsals, plus a literal armful of context-providing memorabilia (posters, ticket stubs, concert programmes, promo photos, etc).<\/p>\n
Do you really need multiple live readings of the same clutch of songs, give or take the odd addition\/subtraction? Of course you do. You\u2019re a hardcore Crimsonite, and you\u2019ll eagerly gorge upon the band\u2019s capacity for fresh and radical improvisation, night after night. The Robert Fripp\/Mel Collins\/Boz Burrell\/Ian Wallace line-up sounds limber and surprisingly relaxed as the performances evolve, and Burrell\u2019s jocular, avuncular introductions are engagingly at odds with music which wants to haunt your dreams, then kill you in one of them. That malignant riff in Cirkus sounds like a Mellotron ambulance reversing over a body, and The Devil\u2019s Triangle is fatally <\/i>oppressive: such a marvellously bloodcurdling and adversarial thing to hurl at an audience\u2019s faces.<\/p>\n
More prosaically, it\u2019s almost light relief to note the stock 12-bar sequences which tick away at the heart of the superhuman, tightly syncopated middle sections of 21st Century Schizoid Man and Pictures Of A City, or indeed to hear Fripp demystifying the Mellotron at the Academy of Music in New York: \u201cIt\u2019s a load of rubbish, like a really bad tape recorder that only works on playback, and it doesn\u2019t do that <\/i>too well.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
