Brazilian metallers Sepultura largely shed their extreme metal tags for their 1996 album Roots<\/i>, their sixth since they formed in Belo Horizonte in \u201983. Their older fans have never completely recovered from this radical style change, but followers of nu-metal pioneers Korn welcomed the new songs\u2019 slower, heavier, groovier tone, then a sound which felt completely contemporary.<\/p>\n
Its principal creator, Korn producer Ross Robinson, encouraged the musicians to dig deep \u2013 musically and lyrically \u2013 and the Seps\u2019 primary songwriter Max Cavalera did exactly that, writing songs about (and collaborating with) Brazil\u2019s indigenous tribes.<\/p>\n
This expanded reissue contains a disc of mostly unheard alternate takes, demos, early sessions, live cuts, remixes; and an excellent cover of Celtic Frost\u2019s Procreation Of The Wicked. The overall vibe is still fearsomely heavy, albeit slightly dated by the presence of guests from Korn and Limp Bizkit.<\/p>\n
Still, it makes sense that Roots <\/i>became Sepultura\u2019s biggest hit, released just before Cavalera left the band and the remaining members began the slow commercial descent which they\u2019re still on now.
