Some proclaimed him a genius while others declared him a madman. The controversy continued in the early 50s, when Monk released a series of 10” albums for Bob Weinstock’s Prestige that weren’t very well received by the majority of jazz critics. He was with the label for two years and in that time recorded what is now regarded as one of his seminal albums, Thelonious Monk Trio, which can be found in a stupendous vinyl package called The Complete Prestige 10” LP Collection (***** Craft), released to commemorate Monk’s centenary year. The set, which reproduces the original artwork and label designs, features five LPs in all, including two spotlighting Monk’s fruitful collaboration with then-rising tenor saxophone titan, Sonny Rollins. Though this music is almost 60 years old, it still sounds incredibly fresh, original, and modern.

For those who prefer to listen to jazz via an analogue format rather than a digital one, there’s another new set of boxed-up 180g vinyl that should go down well. Universal have just unleashed The Divine Miss Dinah (**** Verve), which collects five classic 50s LPs by the dynamic DINAH WASHINGTON (including The Swingin’ Miss D, with Quincy Jones arranging). A similar package, Classic Lady Day (**** Verve) is dedicated to the immortal BILLIE HOLIDAY while Bossa Nova Years (**** Verve) puts the spotlight on saxophone maestro STAN GETZ, focusing on his Brazilian-infused LPs of the early 60s (including Jazz Samba and Getz/Gilberto).

The multitalented Rat Packer, SAMMY DAVIS JR, was considered a saloon swinger rather than a bona fide jazz singer, but he reveals a deep jazz side on The Marty Paich Sessions (**** Jackpot), an excellent compendium of material that found him collaborating with ace arranger, Paich, who creates stylish, jazz-infused backdrops. You get four complete Davis albums recorded for Reprise from the early 60s plus a raft of bonus material.

Though attributed to guitar savant, WES MONTGOMERY, The Complete Montgomery Brothers (*** Essential Jazz Classics), focuses on the Indianapolis fretboardist’s work with his siblings, pianist/ vibraphonist, Buddy, and bassist, Monk. It contains three albums they cut for Riverside and Fantasy in the late 50s (including the live The Montgomery Brothers In Canada) and is packed with cool, head-nodding grooves. Well-worth investigating.

Buddy Montgomery never got the credit that his sterling vibraphone work deserved. Nor did JOHNNY LYTLE, despite fellow mallet maestro Lionel Hampton once declaring that the man from Springfield, Ohio, was the greatest on his instrument. For those unaware of Lytle, Four Classic Albums (*** Avid) offers a vivid glimpse of his talent between 1960-62. The soul jazz-tinged Nice And Easy is arguably the best of the bunch, where the vibraphonist is joined by saxophonist, Johnny Griffin, and a rhythm section comprising Bobby Timmons, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes.

Griffin can also be heard on the ace 1958 album In New York, by trumpeter CHET BAKER, which forms part of Three Classic Albums Plus (**** Avid). The other LPs in the set are Chet and Chet Is Back, while the “Plus” refers to three pieces from the soundtrack to the Italian movie I Solito Ignoti.

If you’re an aficionado of free jazz, it’s worth noting that the long out-of-print Reflections (**** ORG Music) by ALBERT AYLER and DON CHERRY (with Gary Peacock on bass and Sonny Murray on drums) has been reissued on blue and white vinyl as a Black Friday Record Store Day release. Recorded in Copenhagen in 1964, it finds its two protagonists in top form.

Even rarer, and much-coveted by crate diggers in search of dusty breakbeats, is the eponymous debut album from 1977 by SALUKI (**** Round 2), a Norwegian band who fused a spacey jazz intellect with funk earthiness and a prog-rock sensibility and in the process created something unique. It’s now been revived on LP and is a great listen.

Still in Scandinavia, Finnish guitar avatar PEKKA TEGELMAN leads a quartet called QUARTEGEL on a reflective yet lyrical eponymous album (HHHH Kulu) that encapsulates his gentle acoustic style, which is characterised by liquid, fretboard filigrees. Tasteful with a capital T.

Fellow Finn, 37-year-old pianist AKI RISSANEN, is at the dawn of his career. Another North (**** Edition) is the follow-up to last year’s acclaimed debut platter, Amorandom. Combining an acute emotional intelligence with an extraordinary sensitivity and dazzling technique, Rissanen looks certain to reap even more critical accolades this time around. Also worth a spin if you’re a committed fan of Scandi jazz is The Reason Why Vol 3 (*** Headspin) by the scintillating Goran Kajfeš SUBTROPIC ORCHESTRA, it’ll blow your mind wide open.

Less combustible, though it exudes a cool charm, is Formidable (*** High Note), the latest LP by veteran jazz guitarist, PAT MARTINO. Though he’s 73 now, he’s lost none of his digital dexterity, and commands his instrument with the expertise of a true fretboard master.

Noted Israeli jazz bassist and composer, AVISHAI COHEN moves into mainstream territory with a surprising jazz-meets-singer-songwriter-style pop outing, 1970 (*** Masterworks), helmed by Norah Jones’ producer Jay Newland. The 47-year-old sings soulfully and handles an assortment of instruments.

Another Israeli jazz musician, London-based saxophonist and academic GILAD ATZMON, returns in the company of his band, THE ORIENT HOUSE ENSEMBLE, and serves up an aural feast in the shape of The Spirit Of Trane (*** Fanfare Jazz), a fine homage to John Coltrane that includes noteworthy versions of Giant Steps, Blue Train, and Naima.

The flamboyant IAN SHAW, unequivocally Wales’ best-ever jazz singer, returns spectacularly with Shine Sister Shine (**** Jazz Village), a tribute to inspirational women. It includes new material co-written with Tanita Tikaram as well as Shaw’s heartfelt and refulgent repurposing of songs by Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Peggy Lee, and Phoebe Snow.

Finally, MOBO-nominated singer/songwriter, JULIA BIEL, whose voice is a smoky-hued delight, releases her self-titled third album (**** Rokit), which blends jazz, soul, and pop elements into a delectable musical melange.

With his penchant for dissonance and writing jaunty, angular melodies, THELONIOUS MONK polarised opinion in the jazz world when he released his first recordings for Blue Note in the late 40s.
