The slim, hip-pocket style packaging gives these releases a unique selling point. This issue contains 66 tracks featuring artists such as Susan Singer, Lita Roza, Grazina, Patsy Ann Noble and Janice Peters, and covers all types of music; jazz from Ottilie Patterson, pure pop from Ruby Murray, Lorrae Desmond’s rock’n’roll, and the 60s girl-group sound of The Breakaways.

The Lucky Label – Rare Country Music (**** BACM) is a serious collection of country and rockabilly sides from one of the many independent record companies situated in Cincinnati, Ohio, during the late 50s. As this CD is a British Archive Of Country Music release, the hillbilly tracks prevail to a certain extent, but it’s the substantial amount of rockabilly on the label that is most avidly collected on original 45s. Bill Zekie Browning’s rare I’ll Pay You Back, Nelson Young’s Rock Old Sputnik and Bill Watkins’ Missed The Workhouse are all rockabilly in style, even though the Watkins recording does have a countrified fiddle player in the band. Very few independent country labels of the period ran to a high number of releases and Lucky was no exception. The 26 tracks offered here, complete with A- and B-sides, appear to be the full extent of the company’s output.

Cool Hillbilly – 27 Rare Country Music Tracks From The 1950s (**** BACM) features some of the most significant country recordings released on the Cool label based in Harrison, New Jersey. Much, if not most, of the company’s output was paid for by individual artists who were keen to make a record no matter what the cost. Vanity records such as these were the staple of a host of independent operators throughout the US during the 50s and 60s. All of the country singers included – such as Rocky Lane, Frank Oleshay, Vern Wickland and George Quarta Jnr – will be completely unknown to the average person in the street, but they are familiar household names to the true aficionado of country style.

San Antonio, Texas, is the city famous as the site of the Alamo, where a battle for independence from Mexico took place in 1836. Country Music On The TNT Label (**** BACM) features the most important record company to be established in that city. Founded in 1953 as primarily a country label, the large recorded output of TNT during the 50s included a significant programme of rockabilly and rock’n’roll. A few of the tracks reflect this style, such as The Jacoby Brothers’ Food Plan Boogie and Red River Dave’s Truck Driver’s Special, but for the most part it’s hillbilly inclined. Eddie Noack’s Too Hot To Handle, Randy King’s Crazy As A Loon and Ted Filmore’s I’m Goin’ Home, are just a few of many noteworthy tracks in this genre that are included in the compilation.

Extended Play… (*** GVC) is a showcase for CONNIE FRANCIS, one of the most successful US female vocalists of the 50s and 60s. It was the big hits that generally furnished her extended play records, so it’s doubtful if many of her fans would want to pay again now to get those same old tunes such as Who’s Sorry Now, Stupid Cupid and Where The Boys Are, when they probably already have them.

It’s a shame that the subject of the two-disc MATT MONRO Complete 1960- 62 Recordings (*** Fine & Mellow) drank so much and died of liver cancer at the age of 54. The ex-London bus driver, revered as “the singer’s singer” by Frank Sinatra and many other top-drawer vocalists, had a few hits but sold many more albums. However, he is still best known for Portrait Of My Love, the song that brought him to the public’s attention in 1960. This was followed by another chart success, the lightly swinging My Kind Of Girl, written by Leslie Bricusse. There are a total of 55 tracks to choose from and each one has a definite touch of class.

LONNIE DONEGAN’s Lonnie (Second Album) plus Showcase (*** Hoo Doo) celebrates another great British voice. But no one could compete with Donegan, whose distinctive voice and compelling delivery on numbers like The House Of The Rising Sun, Grand Coulee Dam and Midnight Special turned traditional folk songs into pop for the masses.

GENE VINCENT’s Extended Play… (*** GVC) and BUDDY HOLLY & THE CRICKETS’ Extended Play… (*** GVC) are the product of various original EP sides by two giants of 50s rock’n’roll.
