Dissonance have been mining the NWOBHM back catalogue for a while, and have now turned their attention to the metal scenes\u2019 new(ish) pups. British Steel \u2013 The Rising Force Of Heavy Metal <\/i>features contributions, some quite exclusive and all extremely interesting in their own way, from 11 acts who\u2019ve started making waves over the past few years.<\/p>\n
Most of the featured bands come at things from a traditional angle, albeit with a 21st century twist: witness Amulet (whose short\u2019n\u2019sweet Highwayman opens proceedings), Aggressive Perfector, Eliminator (who contribute an oldie Lost To The Void, re-recorded to feature new singer Danny Foster), Dark Forest, Toledo Steel, the Jaguar-inspired Seven Sisters, the heavily Maiden-influenced Neuronspoiler, and Wytch Hazel who, like Dark Forest, have a twist of folk about them.<\/p>\n
On the thrash\u2019n\u2019bash side come noise-mongers Dungeon, Vuil, and Insurgency, all fast and furious, and all sounding like Venom were their daddies. And maybe they were.<\/p>\n
As with most compilations, British Steel\u2026 <\/i>is a mixed bag in terms of the quality of the recordings, but it\u2019s hard to deny the enthusiasm illuminating the bands\u2019 material or their tenacity and motivation to play metal in the face of musical apathy.
