While the records Mute has released over four decades have ended up representing an astonishingly broad musical spectrum, the thing they tend to have in common is a seemingly intuitive sense of style. And this is despite a determination on the part of the design-savvy label head Daniel Miller that Mute shouldn\u2019t have an immediately distinctive house style.<\/p>\n
It makes sense then, that its ruby anniversary is marked by a large, luxurious tactile thing that celebrates its story predominately by way of beautifully reproduced artwork and photography. The text here does a brilliant job of joining the dots through short essays and copious enlightening footnotes.<\/p>\n
You don\u2019t have to be a fan of all of the acts represented here to marvel at the material included. Particularly strong are the spreads of record sleeves in various stages of completion, from original sketches to final product that anyone remotely interested in the process of sleeve design (or design in general for that matter) will find fascinating.<\/p>\n
A Visual Documentary <\/i>makes for fascinating reading (and err… viewing). It\u2019s the story of a label constantly pushing itself, its artists and listeners forward.
