Second. The price\/valuation of a small coterie of artists continues to rise. The Beatles\/Stones\/Hendrix to name three, but I was around when these records were released and I don\u2019t understand why these original albums command such a premium when (for example) CSN, The Lovin\u2019 Spoonful, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane \u2013 and lots more are all available, original copies in good nick for \u00a330-ish and were released at the same time. These artists commanded the same respect at the time as the holy trinity. Please tell me what I am missing. (Influence won\u2019t do. Beefheart\u2019s first album outsold everything at at least one central London store on release.)<\/p>\n
I guess the same logic (illogic?) applies in the memorabilia market. I understand why a guitar Hendrix used is sought after, but I see nothing related to Duke Ellington or Miles Davis for example.<\/p>\n

Well, the influence of these artists <\/i>is a part of it, but the real factor is because people always want original Beatles (for example) albums. They provide a basis of many a (sadly unimaginative) new collection and collectors feel they have to have them. The same doesn\u2019t apply to Lovin\u2019 Spoonful or Beefheart, unfortunately. There are lots of rare records nobody wants: they sell for pennies, if at all. Rarity is not the prime factor when it comes to price: it\u2019s how many people want them.
