Houston-born, Los Angeles-raised Frank Edward Wilson had joined Motown aged 23 and written for and produced Brenda Holloway, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Miracles, The Four Tops and Eddie Kendricks. In autumn 1965, he cut Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) for the Motown imprint, Soul (cat no 35019), with Carol Kaye playing bass and Earl Palmer drums. Reportedly, 250 demo copies were cut, but Motown supremo Berry Gordy allegedly directed Wilson to focus on his production duties rather than a singing career and had the demos destroyed. However, as www.frankwilson.co.uk notes, half-a-dozen copies of the unissued tune survived, with three discs retained in the Motown archive and three more by the ARP record-pressing plant (subsequently reduced to one copy, during a 70s archives record-management cull, to make space in the facility).

Wilson left Motown in 1976 to become a minister, dying in 2009, by which time bootleg copies had made his recording a Northern soul standard. One original copy was reportedly sold in 1998 for £15,000, and another went under the hammer in 2009. As reputedly the only Excellent copy in existence (having been salvaged from Motown’s archive, while the other copy was said to be warped), it made £25,742. However, a third copy that surfaced in the US seems to be a test-pressing that came into the hands of a US collector in Detroit some years ago, among a stash of vintage recordings, reel-to-reel tapes and ephemera. Its owner suspected its value but wasn’t interested in selling until recently, when a Detroit soul aficionado estimated it could make tens of thousands of pounds. Hence its current storage in a bank deposit box, with the owner preferring any interested party who wishes to buy it arranging to visit them in the US, rather than risking it going through the postal system, where it could be damaged or lost.

Robb Klein, who worked for Motown, compiled the From The Vaults series of compilations and had access to its library, states, “I never saw nor heard of this test pressing. It was pressed at RCA Indianapolis, and mastered in Nashville. It looks legitimate, with that 1964-66 Quality Control stamp, and the mid-60s style of test-pressing record with a depressed centre area. The matrices are A-side SK 4 M 4916 1 A Nashville Matrix 5 ZQL 163317 and B-side SK 4 M 4915 1 A Nashville Matrix 5 ZAQQ 147105”.

RC asked its current owner, Dan Zieja, to describe how this fabled artefact came into his possession?

“I started collecting records in 1969 at the age of 13, with money earned by delivering the Detroit Free Press in my hometown of Hamtramck, Michigan, which is a small city completely surrounded by Detroit. I had an early love for Motown music and this became one of the focuses of my collection. It’s difficult to try to pinpoint exactly when the Frank Wilson record came to me and my wife Denise, as we have over 100,000 records in our personal collection. I do know that it was acquired during the time that my wife and I opened our Detroit area record shop, Melodies & Memories Music, which started in April 1988, while our eBay store opened in 2007 (with 7,500 items currently online).

“We thought it was super-rare, but because we’ve never been the type to sell any of our collectibles, it was always a non-issue. We were aware of the sale of one of the singles back in 2009, because we’d been in the business for so long. And it brought us a degree of satisfaction as collectors, knowing that we had a “Quality Control” copy in nearly Mint condition, which we consider to be much rarer than the other two.

“It was only at the Detroit A Go Go function in October 2017 that my wife and I began talking about possibly selling a few items from our collection, and she zeroed in on the Frank Wilson record. We were always reluctant to sell our collectibles before and had only sold one ever, which was a rare Jimmie Rodgers RCA 78rpm picture disc, Cowhand’s Last Ride, which we sold in the days before eBay, allowing us to take our children on a family trip to Walt Disney World! However, we now feel that the time is right to make an item of this magnitude available to the record-collecting community.

“Denise has done quite a bit of research on what Goldmine has referred to as a “$100,000 45” and, with help from our friend, Pete Smith, of Northern Soul Sales (Planet Records), we’ve been able to reach out to many collectors in many countries, which has led to what we can only call an ‘overwhelming’ worldwide response. We’re quite honestly not sure at this time of a closing date for its sale, or indeed whether we’ll use an auction house or conduct a private sale.

“The record seems to have taken on a life of its own at present, but we hope to handle the sale in a proper way. It’s only been played by us on a hi-tech system and its condition would rate a solid 9/10. We feel that a private purchase by a collector would require them flying to Michigan to seal the deal. We can be contacted at Melodies & Memories, 23013, Gratiot Avenue, Eastpointe, Michigan 48021, USA, with enquiries via 00 1 586 774 8480 or dwdm1977@gmail.com.”

In autumn 2017, RC was contacted by a US soul fan who claimed to have a copy of Frank Wilson’s fabled Northern soul classic, Do I Love You (Indeed I Do).
