No. 2: BOB DYLAN 1961-1965<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our bite-sized collecting series continues with flavour of the year to date, Bob Dylan, with his biopic A Complete Unknown<\/em> grossing $132 million at the box office to date and Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet winning Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for his portrayal as Bob. The best thing to happen, however, is that Bob is the cover star of RC<\/em> 569, which features Richie Unterberger\u2019s compelling lead article about Bob\u2019s revolutionary year of 1965. Here, we have a look at his top UK collectables for the period covered by the film, 61-65.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong>Bob Dylan\u2019s first EP release in the UK was a fairly straightforward example of Extended Play practice at the time, standard album versions of standout songs. \u201cDylan is a deeply committed young man who conveys his concern for the world around him through unique and poetic imagery that makes explicit the human condition,\u201d the sleeve earnestly informed his listeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9: BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME<\/strong> (CBS BPG 62515, LP, mono, CBS pressing Matrix: BPG 62515 A \/ BPG 62515 B, rough-textured orange labels, flipback sleeve, 5\/65) \u00a360<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The album which truly struck the \u2018thin wild Mercury sound\u2019 template that was to occupy this and the next two albums, Bringing It All Back Home<\/em> contains some of Dylan\u2019s most loved songs, and is truly transitional \u2013 with its acoustic and electric side. It is impossible not to hear Subterranean Homesick Blues without thinking of him tossing his cards out in the alleyway, and it impossible for a man of a certain age to walk around the back of the Savoy Hotel in London without telling anybody in earshot that that was where it was filmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These three EPs are truly fascinating artefacts, with their ornate in-era designs. All tracks had been available previously on the Fontana LPs Newport Broadside \u2013 Topical Songs At The Newport Folk Festival 1963 (Fontana<\/em> TFL 6038)<\/em> and Newport Folk Festival 1963 Evening Concert Vol.1 (Fontana TFL 6041<\/em>), which hadbeen licensed in from Vanguard in the US. With Dylan and the growing popularity of the folk movement, Fontana decided to stretch the three Dylan songs, one solo, two duets across three EPs. CBS had only licensed the material for album release, and, as a result, the EPs were quickly withdrawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5: Like A Rolling Stone (Part 1)\/Like A Rolling Stone (Part 2) <\/strong>(CBS \u200e201811, 7\u201d, UK promo, white CBS label with large orange \u2018A\u2019, 7\/65) \u00a380<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many, if the essence of Bob Dylan had to be condensed into just one song, it would undoubtedly be this era-defining classic, featured heavily in (and giving the title to) A Complete Unknown<\/em>. Charlie Tahan plays Al Kooper with gusto, crashing the session and adding the distinctive organ part. Kooper was to say \u201cTom said, \u2018You know that guy\u2019s not an organ player, right? \u201cBob said, \u2018I don\u2019t care, just turn it up!\u2019\u201d This rare promo is worth hunting down, holding its value strongly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All-electric, iconoclastic, not so much freewheelin\u2019 as spinnin\u2019 off its axis, there really was no looking back now \u2013 with a tracklisting like a greatest hits, from the superbly evocative \u2018will this do?\u2019 of the cover inwards, the character Dylan created spills out all over the place. Just Like Tom Thumb\u2019s Blues just *may* be the best song ever written. Today, anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These three fascinating, interesting collections were released to circumnavigate UK copyright expiration laws in the three respective years, 2012, 13 & 14, full of rarities and outtakes that at the time were unreleased. Given a quick official released prevented the titles being bootlegged. The first release bore the full title, The 50th Anniversary Collection: The Copyright Extension Collection, Volume 1 <\/em>and was a collection of four CDRs in a plastic wallet in an edition of 100.  Bythe time of the second two, the series professionalise, available on vinyl with their sleeves an affection nod to the most well-known of all Dylan bootlegs, The Great White Wonder. <\/em>Essential stuff for Dylanolgists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
