Having played on over 700 records, won two Grammys, and been appointed adjunct professor at the University of Southern California, there is little that drummer Peter Erskine does not know about the instrument
he has mastered.
Erskine began playing the drums aged four, encouraged by his father who had played bass and led his own swing band during his college days. Aged seven, he enrolled in his first jazz summer camp, where he eventually received the benefit of personal tuition from the legendary Stan Kenton
\u201cSerendipity as well as destiny seem to have played their roles in my becoming the drummer for the Stan Kenton Orchestra,\u201d Erskine informs RC. \u201cAttending the summer jazz camps, he brought his music into my world and me into his orbit. Sooner or later, I would have the opportunity to audition for him. Having listened to his music since childhood, and then graduating from the Interlochen Arts Academy, where I received a wonderful education in both big band and orchestral drumming, the training and desire were sufficient. I had a lot to learn and I learned a lot. Three years with Kenton, back to university for one year and then back on the road with Maynard [Ferguson]. These bands were pathways for many young musicians. Small groups demanded improvisational abilities, but the big bands needed ensemble players. Some of us were fortunate enough to be sitting in chairs where both skills had the chance to be honed. Plus, we travelled all over the world.\u201d
As one of the few trumpeters able to play in the extreme higher register, Ferguson was a mightily gifted and determined, if occasionally confrontational, band leader. Erskine has often said that Ferguson was probably the best boss he ever worked for, but when a certain fretless bass player caught the band in concert one evening, a whole new ball game was about to begin.
\u201cMy joining Weather Report was a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Jaco [Pastorius, bass] heard me playing with Maynard. Weather Report were looking for a drummer who had both ensemble experience as well as improvisational abilities. I would need to work on developing my improvisational gifts as well as fortitude.\u201d
Weather Report was both \u201ca state of mind and a fact of life\u201d, to paraphrase co-founder Joe Zawinul\u2019s old boss Julian \u201cCannonball\u201d Adderley. \u201cAgain,\u201d says Erskine, \u201cI learned a lot. Never the easiest group of people to tour with, but we had a lot of fun and managed to make some pretty good music. The version of the band when I was in it was not and is not my favourite version \u2013 I\u2019m a huge fan of the first album, plus Mysterious Traveller and Heavy Weather \u2013 but you do the best you can do. That said, Sightseeing [a studio cut from 8.30 featuring Erskine] is one of the better things I ever heard the band do.\u201d
By generally ignoring the music he made with Weather Report, the self-effacing Erskine does himself a gross disservice. Over the four albums he recorded with the band in the mid-70s, he made many telling and inventive contributions to such tracks as Pinocchio, Brown Street, Port Of Entry, Fast City and Dara Factor One, to name a few.
Combining the stellar magnitude talents of Zawinul, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Pastorius and Erskine (labelled the Big Four), at that moment in time Weather Report were the hippest and hottest jazz fusion-cum-funk (in Zawinul\u2019s parlance, \u201cmodern American music\u201d) band in the world. It was during his latter period with Weather Report that Pastorius formed his own big band, Word Of Mouth, and invited Erskine to participate in the recording sessions.
\u201cWord Of Mouth [1981 album] reveals Jaco\u2019s compositional abilities as well as his potential. Had Jaco stayed alive, it\u2019s impossible to imagine the incredible music he might have made. Such a loss for us all. Still, the music is powerful, audacious, soaring and beautiful. His happiest moment in making the album was when, during a mixdown session at A&M Studios, Burt Bacharach stopped by to approvingly listen to Three Views Of A Secret. It\u2019s the proudest I ever saw Jaco.\u201d
Inevitably, opposing musical and personal attitudes led Jaco to quit to pursue his big band ventures, with Erskine, for similar reasons, also quitting to join Steps Ahead; a more easygoing musical union formed by Michael Brecker (sax) and Randy Brecker (trumpet).
\u201cSteps Ahead brought me to New York City, and that journey also brought me to Japan on several occasions, where I fell in love with the woman who would become my wife,\u201d he recalls. \u201cSo I have incredibly warm feelings about the band and those musicians. The Modern Times album stands the test of time just about as well as anything else I\u2019ve ever done. Wonderful music.\u201d
Erskine has always been willing to experiment in different musical genres, always believing that one experience informs the other; an attitude that has led him to work with a vast alumni of artists from Vince Mendoza to Diana Krall to Steely Dan, and such renegade artistes as Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush.
\u201cJoni was thanks to Jaco,\u201d he explains. \u201cKate was thanks to Mark-Anthony Turnage and the BBC. She saw and heard me in a documentary chronicling the addition of drums to an orchestral piece that Mark had composed. Joni and Kate are both incredibly powerful artists. Their music has spoken to countless listeners. How fortunate for me to be the drummer on some of their work.\u201d
Forming his own record label, Fuzzy Music, at the turn of the century gave Erskine the independence he had long desired, and in 2015, together with vocalist Jack Fletcher, he formed Dr. Um, a gathering of like-minds seeking a freedom of musical expression. The three albums recorded under the physicians\u2019 percussive moniker give an indication of Erskine\u2019s often subtle, but always sublime, prowess as a drumsmith.
\u201cDr. Um was fun,\u201d he says. \u201cBut I\u2019m back to acoustic music-making now. I had to get some of the lingering electric out of my system, but nothing beats the purity of playing an instrument softly, sweetly and swingingly. THAT is not something I was ready to know or learn when I was a younger drummer in all of those different bands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
