But it was band leader Tommy Ridgley who first advanced her career by securing her a recording contract with Ron Records that specialised in New Orleans R&B. Formed by Joe Ruffino, the label sought to promote local talent, and Thomas found herself in good company with the likes of Professor Longhair and Mac Rebennack (later Dr. John).

Her debut single, (You Can Have My Husband But Please) Don’t Mess With My Man, made No 22 on the Billboard R&B chart, and displays her confidence as a performer, having already established a style of her own.

Switching to the Minit label, Thomas worked with producer and arranger Allen Toussaint, who wrote the blues-soaked It’s Raining (1962) for her; the following year she recorded Ruler Of My Heart, written by Aaron Neville and later covered by Otis Redding and Norah Jones.

In ’64, she scored four Top 100 R&B hits, beginning with the heart-wrenching Wish Someone Would Care on Imperial, written by a distraught Thomas when her first marriage was falling apart. Ironically, the song is backed by the nifty snare drum shuffle of the uptempo Breakaway (penned by Jackie DeShannon and Sharon Sheely), later a major hit for Tracy Ullman. This was followed by Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand), co-written by Randy Newman; another emotional tour de force, it was backed by the gospel-tinged Time Is On My Side which became synonymous with The Rolling Stones, who copied her version word for word (including the ad-libs) for their second album. By a perverse twist of fate, many mistakenly believed that Thomas had appropriated the song from the Stones, an accusation that so annoyed Thomas, she refused to perform the song for decades.

Times Have Changed, and the outstanding He’s My Guy (all on Imperial), completed her chart placings for that year. Such was her popularity at this time that she appeared on compilation albums, cast in the role of an R&B ambassador whose perfectly executed recordings demonstrated her mastery of the genre.

Her last R&B hit was her cover of Otis Redding’s Good For Me in ’68 for Chess, recorded at Muscle Shoals. Her time with Chess was all too short-lived, when the support of a major label could have done so much to further her ambitions. She signed briefly to Canyon, Roker and then Cotillion before joining Swamp Dogg’s own Fungus Records.

With Fungus, she released the soulful In Between Tears (1973) and an album of the same name, an idiosyncratic but immersive affair, too long consigned to obscurity.

After living for several years in Los Angeles, Thomas, now dubbed the ‘Soul Queen of New Orleans’, moved back to New Orleans and began running her own club, The Lion’s Den, with her husband Emile Jackson, where she fronted her own house band. She also regularly performed at the New Orleans Jazz Fest (established in 1970), and the exposure resulted in more frequent and lucrative live work.

Record-wise, there were further label changes. In ’78, she joined Maison de Soul and released Hip Shakin’ Mama, her nod to the dance floor. For Maison, she also recorded the appropriately titled Soul Queen Of New Orleans, an album of reworked favourites from her back catalogue, updated for the disco generation.

In 1986, Thomas signed to Rounder for whom she recorded a string of laudable albums: The New Rules (1986), The Way I Feel (1988), Live: Simply The Best (1991) and True Believer (1992) among other shining examples.

In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina flooded 80 per cent of New Orleans. The Lion’s Den was one of the many hundreds of properties destroyed in the deluge. In the aftermath of the disaster, Thomas entered Dockside Studios in Maurice, Louisiana, to record After The Rain, her 18th studio album and her first to win her a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album – the first woman to win that category since Etta James.

Thomas has also guested on several albums, from BB King to Galactic (check out Lady Liberty on YouTube). In 2011, she appeared on Hugh Laurie’s Let Them Talk album, performing the ballad of steel driving hammerman John Henry. A favourite of Charlie Brooker’s, Anyone Who Knows What Love Is was featured in seven episodes of the Netflix series, Black Mirror.

At Jazz Fest 2024, Thomas was invited to share the stage with The Rolling Stones to perform Time Is On My Side. The song had given the band their first stateside Top 10 hit back in ’64, and Jagger graciously acknowledged their debt to Thomas, while allowing her the opportunity to reclaim a song that was rightfully hers.

Her limited popularity in her home country never brought her the commercial success that was her undoubted due. While Otis Redding, Mick Jagger, Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs and Eric Clapton professed their admiration and recognition of her influence, I also like to think that her rendition of I Need Your Love So Bad may have inspired Peter Green to record his version with Fleetwood Mac for Blue Horizon in ’68.

She has been described as the singer with “the sadly sweet voice of a fallen angel”, and Thomas calls herself ‘The Teacher’ with just cause. Anyone seeking a tutorial on how to attain rhythm and blues royalty should pay attention to the music of her majesty, Irma Thomas.

Words: Lin Bensley

In 2025, Thomas’ album Audience With The Queen, with electro-funk band Galactic, was released by Tchoup-Zilla Records.

<figure
