And proof has just arrived in the shape of a live recording of the band’s landmark 1972 album, Grave New World, a disc that saw them transition from folkies to major-league rockers. At least in American eyes: it’s no coincidence the 2019 show Weaver has been preparing for release on vinyl was recorded in Lakeside, New Jersey, where the city mayor is a major fan.

“It was a fantastic week,” Weaver enthuses. “We did three or four days in the hall, and one evening was taken up with Grave New World Live, with Wesley Stace doing a commentary. It was funny. Dave [Cousins] went onstage beforehand and said, ‘Look, we’ve organised this with a linking narrative, so we would appreciate it if you saved the applause to the end and not between numbers.’ So, we went through the album tracks in order and opened up with Benedictus. We finished, and the whole audience started cheering and clapping. Then they remembered, they calmed down…”

Weaver’s website proudly declares him “the only keyboard player to have played on six consecutive US No 1 hits”. This is thanks to a long association with the Gibb brothers, having joined the Bee Gees’ ranks in 1975. The lineup on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack that spawned many of their biggest hits featured Blue alongside Dennis Bryon (drums), like him a veteran of 60s pop idols Amen Corner. And the Bee Gees connection continues today, as we shall later discover.

Blue Weaver and the Pet Shop Boys sounds a strange pairing, but, with the Fairlight keyboard the sound of the 80s, Weaver’s technical expertise helped get the duo off the ground. He even played on their first live outing in August 1985. “They just had West End Girls out and their manager, Tom Watkins, told me I should produce some of their stuff,” he recalls.

Having helped the Pet Shop Boys re-record tracks for TV and radio performances using the Fairlight, Weaver appeared with them at the ICA in London where they were introduced by semi-animated TV character, Max Headroom. “There was just Chris [Lowe], Neil [Tennant] and myself onstage and two Fairlights. Chris played trombone: I’d got him to play it on the record I produced [I Want A Lover] as well. It’s never happened since. I’d love to see a video.”

Weaver had been a stalwart of the London studio session scene in the 70s, and being in the right place at the right time played a part in his success. He’d been down on his luck after leaving Strawbs for the first time and resorted to minicabbing to pay the rent. Then, at Morgan Studios, he ran into American producer, Bob Ezrin. An earlier Mellotron contribution to Alice Cooper’s Billion Dollar Babies had been well received, so when they reconnected in 1973 Blue was propelled into even more exalted company – literally by the seat of his pants.

“We were sitting there talking,” he explains, “and then, suddenly, Steve Winwood walks over. He had to leave for another gig. So, Bob said, ‘Oh, shit, we haven’t got a keyboard player.’ And then he’s sort of looking at me…” Ezrin opened the studio door, eased Weaver onto the still-warm piano stool and introduced him to Jack Bruce, Aynsley Dunbar and Steve Hunter. One warm-up jam later, Lou Reed walked in. “They wrote out some chords for me, I sat down at the piano, and [Reed’s] Men Of Good Fortune was the result.”

Weaver worked with Graeme Edge of The Moody Blues on several mid-70s solo projects. “I found out afterwards, I don’t know whether it was after Patrick [Moraz] left, that he’d said in an interview, ‘Oh, we considered getting Blue Weaver in, asking Blue to join The Moody Blues.’ And I thought, ‘Graeme, you never told me.’ I read this after he died. I remember listening to [1967’s] Days Of Future Passed when we were driving in the van with Amen Corner and thinking it was incredible. Had it happened, I’d have been Moody Blue Weaver…”

It would indeed have been a full circle moment, since he had recommended Patrick Moraz to Yes when, in 1974, he declined their offer to once again follow Rick Wakeman as he had with Strawbs. “Rick was always Rick and I was me. I couldn’t, I can’t, play like him.”

Still, if you’re a fan of happy-ever-after stories, Grave New World Live will be right up your street. “I always say once a Strawb, always a Strawb. I was always there, always doing something. When Dave asked me, I would go and tour, or I would do a concert.” And as recently appointed honorary Professor of Music at Bangor University – “It’s amazing because I hardly went to school!” – he’s now using Strawbs material as a teaching tool.

Out of all the greats he’s worked with – Andy Fairweather Low, Ian Hunter and Barry Gibb among them – Blue still holds Dave Cousins, who passed away in July last year, in the highest regard. “He was the one who had the least recognition for the quality of his musicianship and songwriting. He’s not just a songwriter, a lyricist, he’s a poet – in every one of his songs, you can take the music away and there’s a story there.”

You can catch Weaver, a sprightly 79, on the road in Europe with a stage show based around the songs and the history of the Bee Gees and featuring three Italian brothers.
